Q: My Mac has tons of issues.

Hello,

i have a Mac mini Mid 2012. I have loved this machine for the most part, as it is my first Mac. I don't like it though, because I have had tons of issues that had to be fixed. In the first month, the HDD failed. Then it went on to app store breaking, iMovie breaking, and I recently i caught a virus that I didn't realize I had because I stopped using Chrome. The problem now, being that that my Ethernet no longer works. On Top of that, it is SUPER slow. Constantly.

IF anybody can give me some insight to why this thing has had this many issues and how I can't prevent dumb stuff like this, I am all ears.

Thanks.

Mac mini, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), 2012 Year Model

Download and run EtreCheck so we can get some information about your Mac: http://etrecheck.com.

As for the "virus," no such thing currently exists for OS X, so you'd have to describe the symptoms for us to figure out what it really is.

The problem now, being that that my Ethernet no longer works.

That problem is caused by a bug in an automatic software update that was pushed out last night.

If you don't already have a current backup, please back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.11 ("El Capitan"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

On Top of that, it is SUPER slow.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

    Hi,

The "virus" that I got was a safari extension that made my computer reboot and do a whole bunch of other things, like it would always bring me to a technical support site and show me fake error messages. This did not effect Google chrome. After uninstalled the "extension", all these issues went away. I have since installed my ISP's antivirus, and malware bytes.

Moral of this story, Macs are not virus free period. (Accept for Pre-Intel Macs.)

As for the not working Ethernet and the rest of the slowness, I will soon be getting an SSD, and disabling some startup instances. On top of that, I will be restoring from a Time Machine backup.

    Thanks for your feedback.

(I will start collecting log info, and regularly running diagnostics of some sort, even if its just me checking everything.)
