Q: Can I replace my BT Homehub 5

I am based in the UK and I have BTs fibre optic package 80mb service. (I receive 74mb). I have BTs Homehub 5. However I am wanting to replace this with an Apple product. I have a AirPort Extreme 802.11n (5th Gen). Would this be able to do the job the BT Homehub does, or is there another product I can use instead?

Thanks

The BT home hub 5 now includes a VDSL modem.. (assuming you cannot see any other modem in the house).

It therefore cannot be replaced unless you buy your own VDSL modem.. and setup the airport to do PPPOE.

The problem here is apple router do not handle PPPOE well in all situations.. I use ADSL (sadly nothing faster yet) but after testing about 20 or 30 different Apple routers.. none of them work reliably on PPPOE on my setup.. I tried with multiple modems.. Apple has no .. repeat ZERO controls.. therefore if something is wrong.. eg number of attempts by PAP before change to CHAP.. there is exactly NOTHING you can do about it. Since ISP delight in using their own routers now and making it as difficult as possible to replace.. I would not be surprised if you find the same thing.

Do you know the PPPOE credentials as this is also crucial to making this work. Some ISP simply refuse to give them out and people have to attempt various hacks to find what should be made available to them.

Most likely the best way to use the Apple router is bridged like everyone else.. or if you want more control via the Apple router (an oxymoron if ever there was one) use static IP method.. see here. Has been very successful in my setup.
