Q: Battery Recall

I just read an article about how more ibook batteries are being recalled:

http://www.prnewswire.com/news/index_mail.shtml?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/08-24- 2006/0004421452&EDATE=

Time for everyone to check their batteries again (I do not believe mine applies with HQ4527 =/...oh well). Its not on the apple website yet, but it should be soon.

OK, finally talked to Apple support and they're sending a new battery out after having the same problem. I ended up hitting zero on all the prompts (including when they asked me what product I wanted support for) and waiting on hold for about an hour and a half.

It looks like the support people do have the ability to override the form and send out replacements to people who are in the range but getting invalid serial errors. It just may take you a while to get through. As far as I know going through the apple portable or battery recall support just gets you hung up on, though.

Same problem - my iBook G4 serial checks out okay, but the battery serial # is rejected.

Mine (Model A1061, serial 6C534) definitely falls in the 6C519 - 6C552 range.

    Not cool.

Please visit the actual wedsite for the "Consumers Product Safety Commission". The link is below. You will see that the actual and correct battery serial #'s.

The battery serial numbers listed on some websites are incorrect! See the actual recall notice at the link.

Try this link to CSPC and click on recent recalls. The other link didn't work. Sorry about that.

Any idea if this extra heat could damage RAM or Airport Extreme Card? Both quit working 2 weeks ago.

They may not be incorrect -- just referencing the earlier (and still valid) recall such as listed in this earlier CPSC post:
    http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml05/05179.html
On apple's battery recall site, you have to scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the tiny link that will take you to this earlier recall and then enter the serial numbers for that recall there.

Most of the time I check the website to see if they fixed the battery serial # problem and I usualy get this message.

"We are sorry. Our systems are experiencing heavy traffic at this time and are unable to complete your request. If you have resubmitted this form, your initial request may already be registered by our systems. If we have received your request, and you provided your email address, you will receive a confirmation email shortly. Please try again later to submit your replacement battery order if you do not receive a confirmation from us."

hmm...surprise, now they have two problems with their website.

I posted a question here yesterday specifically about the A1080 in the 14" iBooks (because my 14" A1080's serial falls within the recall range) and after asking a more pointed question about how it was possible that only the 12" and 15" batteries were affected by the Sony chemical defect...

...my post was deleted. I help make purchasing decisions for this department. Being unable to get straight answers and reading posts in this thread about similar situations does not incline me to continue recommending Apple hardware.

Sat on hold for 45 min waiting for Tech Support. They were able to verify battery SN, and order me a new one. He stated they are jammed with calls for service regarding the problem. Hope this helps.

Andrew, the serial numbers on the models are generated by apple. No manufacturer single sources components and only apple knows who made which battery. Consecutive numbers could have been made by different sources, plants, processes.

The 14" battery is a different model. The similarity in serial numbers is purely internal to apple and does not indicate that it was made by sony (though it might have been - a different factory, different manufacturing process maybe, only apple knows, not only Sony make batteries)

Did anyone else notice that their number has an extra number as compared to the demo on the recall page?

The battery recall web page tells me my battery is invalid. Even if you put in the serial numbers Apple's announcements say are valid, you are told they are invalid as well. Call them, go to the battery support choice and you get an announcement telling you to go to the website, then you get disconnected.

We need a new recall. Recall the Apple Battery Recall web page. Seems it was made by Sony as well, possibly using rootkit technology.

I called customer relations this morning. 15 minute wait to talk to first person. He verified that I need the new battery (serial number had been rejected by the site various times) then transferred me to support. Support guy couldn't make it work either. Tried three times, tried to override system, and still couldn't make it work.

Speaking of the Support staff, it certainly would be helpful if you could call at other times rather than having to wait for 6am PST. I had already been trying the web site for 3 hrs by then!

Still no luck, the web site still tells me that my battery serial number is invalid: ZZ414...

    <sigh>
