Q: Is there any possibility to change the page layout in Books with the new Photos software. With Aperture, you could change the image sizes, specify the exact dimensions, change image positions on the pages, in a nutshell do everything you want.

With Photos, you have to stick to the proposed layouts.

Moreover, the image positions on the layout, most often do not respect any standard size, eg 3 x 2 ou 2 x 3.

What I mean is that, as a photographer for 40 years or more, I wish my photos to be printed in the original format I used to take the picture. If I spend time and energy to compose my image in the way I want, on a 3 x 2 frame, I want yo keep this frame when I put this image in a book.

Obviously, the Photos book is not designed for photographers.

Unless I have missed something?

Can someone confirm or advise ?

Thank you.

There seems to be no way to resize or move the photo boxes.  You can change the fonts, but the general layout is fixed.

For some themes you can at least ensure that your photo will not be cropped, when you add it to a photos box, but for some themes even that is not possible:

Change the size of a photo in a frame

You can increase or decrease the size of a photo in a photo frame.

    • Click Projects in the toolbar, then double-click the book.
    • Double-click the page that contains the photo.
    • Do one of the following:
      • Resize a photo: Double-click the photo you want to change. Drag the Zoom & Crop slider to increase or decrease the photo’s size, and drag the photo to reposition it in the frame.
      • Fit an entire photo within a frame: Control-click the photo and choose Fit Photo to Frame. (This command isn’t available for all themes.)If you fit a photo in its frame, blank edges may appear on the long sides of the photo so that the widest portion of the photo can fit within the frame.
      • Flip a photo within a frame: Control-click the photo and choose Flip Photo. When you flip photos, be aware that text or logos that appear in the photo may appear as a reversed mirror image.

Use Aperture to create your books, while you still can. It is totally unclear, how long Apple will support the print services for iPhoto and Aperture.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

Many thanks for your quick answer.

    I agree.

You can fit  a photo within the frame but if you do so with several pictures on one page, you get plenty of blank space and you get a very different layout, eg when you want a page with no white space at all and you get many blank edges at the end.

And you cannot move the boxes to correct this.

On Aperture books, I think it is the end: I received a book designed on Aperture recently (one week ago) and I got a message telling me that after March 1st, 2016, it will no longer be possible to order a book via Aperture.

    Many thanks anyway.

    Regards.

That is the same bad news as for iPhoto books. Thank you for letting us know.

For iPhoto the date was March 31, that has been posted by a few forum members.

The Photos book will need a lot of improvement, there are still so many issues.

    • The missing custom layouts for photo boxes and text fields.
    • The maps have nearly no detail and it is difficult to position places makers.
    • The metadata from the photos do not appear automatically in the text fields.
    • The photos will not stay in the order they have been added.
    • The  book themes have no documentation, so it is hard work to find a suitable theme.
