Q: Mail icon does not open Mail-Mail 8.2 and Yosemite

Suddenly, and I mean suddenly, when I click on the Mail icon, in the dock, it no longer opens a Mail viewer window. I must go to the Mail menu (overhead) which does appear, and click on Mail, and File>New Viewer Window. This is a new issue which I will appreciate resolving.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Click the Apple menu in the menubar, choose ForceQuit, select the Finder and "relaunch".

    That should do it.

Thank you, Lex. That solved it. I suppose it hung up.

Do you know much about using "spaces" or whatever they're now called?

What do you want to know? More information would help.

Yes I do know what you mean: Spaces was in Leopard and SnowLeopard. Since Lion it is called MissionControl. Look in the Applications folder.

I know this question is shifting gears from Mail and its hanging up to another aspect of Yosemite. What I meant by "space," is what you've figured out-Mission Control.

I think that this feature could be of use in organizing work projects. Regardless of what I learn about the feature, I cannot figure out how to get the feature to work well. Eg., if one wants to have one project that consists of a Pages doc, a Numbers doc, a webpage and a calendar, and I have those open, I can move those open files into a "space" or "desktop" per Mission Control (MC).

However, if I open something else, somewhere else, it may open that first "space" and files come flying into the desktop where I'm working. The files get jumbled, again, which is what I"m trying to avoid.

I've learned that if an app is open, one can go to the dock (below) hold/click the app icon and choose Options. There one finds different settings. I've tried them all, and nothing seems to keep certain docs in their own "space." (very confusing)

I hope this provides more information about what I'm asking. If I should post this, elsewhere, please advise.

Here is a somewhat older exposé about Mission Control:

Here is what Apple says about it:

Use Mission Control on your Mac - Apple Support

    and here a Wiki:

I do not use it myself.

When doing a project, you have to have all applications assigned to the same Desktop to avoid the behavior you are seeing.

    Eric,

It seems clear that Mission Control does not allow a user to do what I think it should allow. And, that would be to work on a project, that consists of multiple apps and then move those apps to one of the MC "spaces," when moving on to another project. When it's time to return to the project, by merely going to the "space," one could pick up where left off.

That would be very useful. Without that feature, I don't see any function for MC.

    Thanks.

I did some reding: Mission Control is not really for different projects I think, it sees the whole mac as one project. Not best said, but that is my impression.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Eric, the MissionControl specs are ok, no problem. But the OP saw more possibilities for his projects. A very interesting idea, I think, for an extra dimension of Mission Control. A  feedback to Apple would be good, but as an extra possibility for MissionControl not a problem.

I think that I'm the OP  in Lex's post. So, here's what I sent to Apple Feedback:

I incorrectly presumed that Mission Control (MC)  and its "desktop," aka spaces feature, would do what I will suggest here. Without this capability, I truly do not know what good MC is.

A feature should allow a person to work on multiple projects, simultaneously, and yet keep his/her desktop space clear except for the immediate project. To do that, MC should allow us to group multiple apps in each of the several "spaces."

Eg., a project may require a Pages doc, a Numbers doc, a webpage open, etc. Then, when moving to another project, by being able to move the work product to a “space,” one can return to that space and resume with all the apps and docs left there.

Otherwise, we must search for each of the docs, each of the apps where we left off.

Good work ! As Eric says they will not respond, but Apple take such suggestions seriously and maybe we will see a change of features in the future.
