Q: imatch apple music ipod problem

Hello.

I recently bought a new desktop.

I transferred my entire library via I match, which worked fine.

I am a member of apple music.

Recently trying to put music onto my I pod ( not i touch) it will not allow me to put certain songs on saying they are apple music songs.

I have no I cloud function on my I pod. I have turned off apple music on my preferences. It is saying that some of my old transferred CD music on iTunes is apple music and not my own. Am I going to have to load all my cd s again that it wont allow???

Thank you.

iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009), iOS 9.2.1

I am a member of apple music.

Do you also subscribe to iTunes Match?  If you only have Apple Music, you have an iCloud Music Library, but it works differently (compared to iTunes Match).  One key difference is that for songs that "match," when you download a copy, you get the Apple Music version of the song file.  It has DRM (copy protection).  Apple Music downloads do not work with iPods (except for iPod touch).

If you have iTunes Match (with or without Apple Music), downloaded songs are DRM-free.  This is Apple's document that describes the diference

The song files on your old computer are the originals.  The best method is to transfer your complete iTunes library from the old computer to the new computer.  If you still have access to that computer, with its iTunes library intact, you can post back for more information about transferring it to your new computer.

Thank you very much Kenichi for your reply.

Sadly I do not have my old desktop. So I cannot transfer the library again. Its up in the cloud and on my new computer from I match.

Yes I subscribe to I match AND apple music.

I have tried so much to sort this I am pulling my hair out and am furious I cannot sort it.

I have about one third of my old library , imported by cd and so on , stuck in apple music and I cannot change them to matched and put them onto my I pod....

I have the I tunes up to date version.

I have tried to un download and re download.

Please please any ideas to sort this.... Do I unsubscribe to I match or apple music ?

You should keep a local copy of all of your song files, and then back up that copy in case your hard drive (or your computer) fails.  Even with iTunes Match, what you get back when you download songs is not exactly like the originals.  For matched songs, you get back the song file that Apple sells on iTunes Store, which may be a different format and bit rate compared to your original files imported from music CDs.  For uploaded (not matched) songs, depending on the original song file format and bit rate, the version you get back may not be the same file because the song file may be converted during the upload.  Your original song files (stored on your computer) are not altered by the process of creating your iCloud Music Library.

Did you have iTunes Match first (before Apple Music), when your iCloud Music Library was created?

Show your iTunes music library using the Songs view, to show a plain list with columns.  Show the column for iCloud Download (if it's currently hidden), which is a narrow column with a cloud symbol in the heading.  You can show/hide columns by right-clicking the heading row of song list.  You can move a column left or right (in the song list) by dragging the column by its heading.  Also show the columns for Kind and iCloud Status.

In the iCloud Download column, songs that are currently NOT stored in your computer's local storage have a cloud with down-arrow symbol.  If that symbol is there for a song, it means that song is only stored in iCloud.  Songs you want to sync to the iPod must be stored locally (no cloud with down-arrow symbol).

In the Kind column, songs that have Apple Music AAC audio file will not sync to your iPod.  Other songs should sync.

In the iCloud Status column, the current iCloud-related classification of songs is shown.  Songs are Purchased, Matched, Uploaded, or Apple Music.  If you subscribe to (pay for) both iTunes Match and Apple Music, when you download songs from your iCloud Music Library, the songs that are Apple Music are treated as subscribed (not owned) songs.  They use DRM which requires verification of your subscription when played.  They will not sync to your iPod.  Songs that are Purchased, Matched, or Uploaded are treated as owned songs; they should sync to your iPod.
