Q: iMac 5k 27" double pixelated Photoshop HELP

Hi all,

So my work just bought me a new 27 inch iMac with Retina 5k display (running OSX El Capitan Version 10.11). We installed the complete Adobe package and all but then when I started working in Photoshop I noticed a weird problem. Everything in my Photoshop is 'double pixelated'. So when I open a file of 2000x1500px, the size I see at 100% is 1000x750px. When I zoom in to 200% the size I see is 2000x1500px but of course everything is blurry.

I already searched the internet for other people having the same problem and possible solutions but no luck. I can change the resolution to 5k (5120x2880, currently 2560x1440) but then everything is twice as small (think of Finder, browser and also the tools and everything in Photoshop). I almost can't read anything on my screen anymore with this resolution so that's not what I want at all...

I also searched the forums of Adobe to see if maybe it's their problem. All I could find was to update to the latest version of Photoshop, which I already have. My sister has the same size iMac but 4k with the same resolution (2560x1440) and there are no problems at all.

Does someone know how to resolve this?

Please, let me know. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Natascha

Basically the effects you are seeing is because you are running the display in scaled mode. If you want a 2000x1500px to display correctly you need to be in the native 5120x2880 resolution for the display. In which case as you noted, the Finder and Photoshop controls etc. will be smaller.

There is no way to scale the interface without scaling the images.

You can zoom the entire screen by holding down the control key while you scroll vertically if that helps.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

But that's just st*pid... I think no one is going to work like this? Then why spent to much money on a 5k iMac when you can't even work properly on it.

You are still in scaled mode. Try Default. Plus, your display controls are very different than mine.

You posted you are running OSX 10.11 but your Display preference panel is from OSX 10.10 (or earlier). Which OS are you running?

When you hold down option key and then click Scaled you'll see the same as me Im running 10.11.

Also, I wasn't running in scaled mode before. See below:

    Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-11.18.23-AM.jpg

Here you see an image with the size of 2000x1333px. The resolution of the screen in default is 2560x1440 px. As you can see the image is only showing 1000px width in 100%.

Yes, you were running in scaled mode before. I can see it checked in the screenshot plus the list of resolutions is shown.

The default resolution for a 5k Mac is 5120x2880 not 2560x1440.

I think it's time someone else helps you.

edit: FWIW, the default Display resolution is 2560x1440.

You can see it in the screenshot yes but I can tell you I wasn't running in scaled mode before because I just clicked the scaled mode for the screenshot. When I got the mac the default resolution was 2560x1440.

Hold down option key and click Scaled, you'll see it yourself that your 'default mode' is 2560x1440...

    See my edit.

I still don't understand what the main problem is. So I would wait for someone else to reply.

    Okay, thanks anyway!

Maybe for someone else: below there's an image of 570x700px but the actual size you see in 100% is 285x350px.

    Screen-Shot-2016-02-29-at-11.58.25-AM.jpg

Here you can see how it's supposed to be, but then I always have to work in 200% to see the right size and all is blurry (in this image it's not that blurry but I can assure you most of the times it's really bad).

I'm going to try once more this way. 500x700px is not a size. It's x number of pixels in one direction and y pixels in the other. That never changes. Only how it's displayed changes. So depending on what scale one is using, it will determine how "large" that image will appear when shown as "Actual Size". The image itself is still 500x700px. I think people get confused between DPI and PPI.

You may want to pick up the telephone and call AppleCare, if the computer is less than 90 days old you have 90 days of complimentary AppleCare. Someone should be able to give you a hand. If you aren't aware of AppleCare, please click http://www.apple.com/support/complimentary/

Just to add, if you took a ruler and placed it on a 5K iMac in native 5120x2880 and measured a 500x700px image it would measure approx 2.29" x 3.21". The same image running in the default 2560x1440 would measure 4.58" x 6.42". If your monitor displayed at 1 pixel per inch, you would need a 41.67'x58.33' display to show it all.

There's nothing wrong with her iMac.
