Have you checked, if you have enough free disk storage - at least 10GB free on your system drive?
Where is your project stored? Onyour system drive or on an external drive?
Do you have any third party audio units installed? Incompatible audio units ot plug-ins can be causing such random errors.

Feb 29, 2016 11:24 AM in response to jice78by icyjamie,more or less the same here. After upgrading to El Capitan, these problems started. When I get the spinning ball, I switch to Safari and back, and Garageband unfreezes again. Very strange

Mar 2, 2016 3:02 PM in response to léonieby jice78,I have 800 gb free. Every project freezes. The songs are stored on the computer. I have a yamaha YPG-535 keyboard installed, and an M-Audio MobilePre installed. Still freezes constantly. Gets to the point where the entire computer freezes up.

As far as I can see, there is no compatible driver for El Capitan, but check this out. Having incompatible drivers installed can cause such freezes.
