Your iPod nano must be 5th gen.  If so, this happens because it has a camera.  After Photos opens when you connect iPod, near the top of the window, is there a checkbox for Open Photos for this device (or words to that effect)?  If you see that checkbox, uncheck it.  Photos should no longer open when iPod is connected.

Yes it is a 5th gen Nano with a camera.  On the Photos screen in iTunes, there is only the check box to sync photos which is unchecked.  Also, in the General Settings on the iPod itself, there is a selection for Photos which is also unchecked.

Not the Photos settings screen in iTunes.  When you connect the iPod, the Photos app opens and shows its window.  On the Photos app window, near the top, there should be a checkbox that says something like Open Photos for this device.  Uncheck that setting and close Photos.  It should no longer open when you connect the iPod.

Perfect!  That does it.  I had never gone past the introductory screen in Photos because I don't use the photo library in this user profile.  Once I clicked Get Started, I saw the check box for the device.

    Thank you very much.
