Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
If I understand correctly, you're concerned because you aren't able to sync all of the phots from your iPhone to your MacBook Air. The article below may explain why this issue is occurring, as it outlines the types of media that the photos can be categorized as and the available options for syncing that kind of media.
Sync media between your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and iTunes on your Mac or PC - Apple Support
Camera Roll photos and videos - Import your media using Photos, Image Capture, iPhoto, Aperture, or another photo app.
- Keep your photos up to date across devices using iCloud Photo Library.
- Sync your photos using Photo Stream4.
Photos synced from a computer* - On iOS devices, you can use iCloud Photo Library, Photo Stream4, or the sharing feature.
- Back up your original photos as a precaution.
iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Photo Stream3 - iCloud automatically updates Photo Stream photos on all devices using iCloud Photo Library or Photo Stream4.
Also, this article provides a lot of great information that can help you free up storage space on your iPhone:

Cheers.

Mar 2, 2016 11:31 AM in response to Jason Lby Nijmo,Hello Jason,
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, it the article doesn't mention the issue. The thing is, when I connect my Iphone to Itunes, I can see that I have over 3400 items in the photo category, which takes up almost 2gb of storage space. Oddly enough, when I try to import those files with 'Photos' or Iphoto it says there are no files to be imported. Last night I imported only a small number (206) and have not taken new photos since then..
How can it be that there is so much space used, yet no photo or video files can be imported?
