Q: I am just setting up family sharing. Not sure how to get an app from one computer to another.

To be able to use family sharing (home sharing is different, it's used for streaming/copying iTunes content) your son's MacBook needs to be on Yosemite (OS X 10.10) or higher, he can then (if the app is still in the Mac App Store and shareable) download it : What types of content can I share with Family Sharing? - Apple Support
