Q: Gaming on Macbook Air

I am trying to play some games on MacBook Air version 10.11.3. It is a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 processor. It has 8 GB on it only because I am partitioning it with Windows 8 via Bootcamp. My Macintosh HD drive has 14.41 GB free.

I am trying to play Need For Speed (rival or most wanted) on my Windows 8 partition. It seems to lag a bit. I don't know why it's lagging or how to fix it. I have researched all over Google and can't find anything that I can fix. The game runs, it just has a 3-second delay. My brother tried to reduce the resolution, running speed, etc. but it crashes whenever the settings are changed.

Any solutions would make me very happy.

Thank you

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Check your video card developer's website.

I have Windows 7 on my MacBook pro and could play Star Wars: The Old Republic without issue on "High" but I had to download drivers from NVIDIA to get things working properly. One nice thing about Windows on a Mac is you can control the settings on the video card. So I would get the drivers, and then lower the settings within the game itself to a lower standard. So instead of running at Ultra (which I highly doubt you can run without building a computer from scratch), try running at Medium. Depending on your video card developer, you may or may not have to install a video card control panel. With NVIDIA, it was installed automatically in my Windows 7 control panel.

Based on the processor and RAM you have, there shouldn't be lag unless it's related to the power of your video card being over stretched.

So I went to the Apple Button on the top left corner of the screen, pressed About This Mac --> Support --> Important Information. It redirected me to a website about my Mac's information (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) and showed me this:

    • Intel Iris Graphics 6100
    • Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 3840 by 2160 pixels on up to two external displays, both at millions of colors.
    • Thunderbolt digital video output
      Native Mini DisplayPort output
DVI, VGA, dual-link DVI, and HDMI output supported using Mini DisplayPort adapters (sold separately)
    • HDMI video output

Try Intel's driver tool located here

Download and install the tool and let it run. It will tell you which drivers you need to download. I would do this while booted into Windows 8

Here is a FAQ section on the utility: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/iduu-faqs.html

If there is a driver control panel already installed in the computer's Control Panel, you can probably update the drivers from there as well

While booted to Windows, is there a control panel for your video card located in your Control Panel?

Open Intel Iris Graphics and see if there is an option there to update the drivers. If there isn't, you may want to get in contact with Intel about which driver you need to install.

Once you install Windows 8 and start dabbling in Windows issues, this is no longer an Apple supported issue. I'm not saying no one on the support site can help you, but everyone here is much more knowledgable about Apple OS over Windows.

Sorry to redirect you elsewhere. When I am at my home computer which is running Windows I can try to help you further. Is there not an option to update within the Intel Iris Graphics pane??

I found a place at Intel's website that allows me to download and look for drivers. It's called Intel Driver Update Utility 2.4. I clicked Run. A window appeared saying "Update your computer with the latest Intel drivers in 3 easy steps." I started the Scan. No option for drivers came up. Is this good? The website I used to install the application was here. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html

That is where I directed you originally...not sure what else to do here. I remember installing Windows 7 was a pain in the "you-know-what."

When you installed Windows 8, do you remember downloading the necessary drivers to an external USB drive and then install them during the Windows install? There could have been an issue with the installation of your game as well.

Do you have any other games you can test? Like maybe Hearthstone or some other free game as a test?

Furthermore, try opening your game and then change the graphics settings within the game itself. I would start by setting everything to Auto. If it defaults to High or Ultra, your computer will have trouble running the game if it can't handle those settings

I changed the graphics inside the game and it helped a lot. I found an older drive that helped a little, but with the driver updated and the screen resolution really low, I managed to get it working. Thank you for your help!
