Q: El Capitan Bugs: USB Ports Not working + Shut down / Restart Problems

Since I updated to El Capitan, a couple of big issues:

1) My USB ports are not working properly. My superdrive won't get any power, so can't load any CDs. My USB mic (which worked fine with Yosemite) shows briefly as connected, and then immediately drops off. External hard drives, strangely, seem to work ... if intermittently. Huge problems here as I need to use my mic and CD drive, etc.

2) I can't shut down nor restart! When I try, the screen clears the desktop except for the background image, and then... nothing. I have to reboot and shut down manually by holding the power button every time.

This is on a mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina.

I've reset the P Ram, I've reset the SMC, I've cleared my login items, and I've done a second clean re-install of El Capitan.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Arrrrrghhh.  I am so kicking myself.  Late 2012 Mac Mini Server, 16GB, was running rock solid with 10.8, now a useless El Capitanian turd on top of my desk except for a bunch of basic stuff like the calendar and the mail client.  My beloved Blue Yeti Pro apparently doesn't rate anymore.  Granted, going to System Prefs > Sound > Input is hilariously entertaining -- I can just sit there for hours and hours now and watch the available devices list go from one item (Line In) to 2 items (Line In, Blue USB 2.0), then back to Line In only, then back to both a couple of seconds later... then Line In only... you get the idea.

Why Oh Why did I trust you, Apple?  Why?

Clearly this is a USB control sw issue.  Apple, if you're out there, please acknowledge that it's a goof (getting past denial is the first step on the road to healing) and then fix it...  please?  I'd really appreciate it if someone will post a reply up here when an actual FIX does arrive from Apple (not some new Hail Mary sequence of contortion-guesses that still won't fix it).  Many thanks...

I have had the same problem.  I have contacted Blue and Apple.  Blue is blaming Apple and Apple is blaming Blue but at the end of it all it is Apple's fault because in coding the new operating system El Captain they did something that has rendered the driver file invalid.   I have contacted the technicians at Apple and I am still waiting for a fix.  I hope they take responsibility and fix this issue quickly as it has been long enough already.

I have a  Macbook Pro Retina (mid-2013).  After loading El Capitan my two USB ports stopped working.  After trying many of the suggestions here (other than a clean wipe and reinstall) I did this:

I have the Onyx free app for cleaning my hard rive.  In the cleaning menu of that app I cleaned "System".  After cleaning, that app requires a restart.  When I restarted, the USB ports were working gain.

I think the system clean clears out the cache, which is somehow interfering with the USB operation.

Onyx is a free app and does not load adware on your computer.   I have no association with Onyx other than as a user.  Try it and see if it works for you.

Hey guys! I was having the same issue with my newish Yeti not working on either my Mac's. I grabbed a completely different cable, connected it to the Yeti and USB input on my Mac and it WORKED! I tried it on both devices and was able to record.  Hope this helps someone... ;-)

For me this happened due to an audio device driver problem...DigiCoreAudio Device.  This was an older audio driver that for whatever reason wasn't allowing the system to restart or shutdown properly.  I went through and deleted these files....

So I basically read: Use a programm the developer doesn't see a penny for and the geniuses suggest "format c:" - Oh my...

I'm going to donate money to that folk today, because I've been using his app since the first versions....

    Hi everyone -

    Thank-you s.gerow for your tip:

"For me this happened due to an audio device driver problem...DigiCoreAudio Device.  This was an older audio driver that for whatever reason wasn't allowing the system to restart or shutdown properly.  I went through and deleted these files....

YESSS!!!!  FINALLY!!  i was having the vexing problems of not being able to shut down and USB behaving all whacky.  i went into all the directories listed at that link you provided and got rid of literally everything DIGI that i could find on my computer, and while i was at it, i cleaned out all other obviously old or unnecessary files in each of those directories that i thought could be problematic.

NOW MY COMPUTER SHUTS DOWN AND STARTS UP LIGHTNING FAST!

thank-you thank-you thank-you!  Everyone, if you've got anything AVID or DIGIDESIGN installed on your machine and El Capitan is playing up, definitely try this before a full wipe of your drive!!

    Kelly x

I finally upgraded to El Capitan after waiting for awhile.  After install my USB3 hub stopped working.  Seems like a pretty huge bug and I'm surprised Apple hasn't fixed it 3 versions in.

I tried running OnyX and it didn't solve anything.  I know there is a fix out there bu it is very complicated--something an average user would not be able to do.  If someone else has fixed it, why can't Apple?

Same here.  I still cannot use my USB 3.0 hub after months of having El Capitan.  It's extremely frustrating since they only have 2 USB ports on their MacBook Pros.  I don't understand how to get their attention about this.  It's as if they don't know that they have a serious flaw in their USB driver, of all things.  Anybody have any idea on how to get Apple to weigh in?

My USB is not working too, after upgrade to el capitan none of the s232/ttl bridges are working well, after disconnecting the TTL device while session on serial monitor or console is active the port is disappearing from system and you cannot detect the bridge.

Wen you unplug and plug it back to the same port still nothin.

When you plug the same bridge to the second port it is working, but when you unplug the TTL device while connection over the terminal is active the device is not detected.

Only solution is to restart the laptop, and it works back, till the same scenario.

I'm bored with those problems, as developer, i just think that after 16 years of using apple i just buy Lenovo and install Ubuntu.

APPLE iS A CRAPPY SYSTEM WITH CRAPPY 5$ Hardware, the times when they have really excellent hardware and software have gone a few years ago... Now it's just a crap for fanboys

TTL = Serial device (yes people are developing and designing stuff that still needs proper support for Serial/ttl ) not only watching **** and movies online.
