Mar 12, 2015 2:27 PM in response to Sbyrne1984by joe_7399,Greetings Sbyrne1984,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that the available storage on your iPhone seems to be jumping around at random times. The troubleshooting step I would suggest in this situation would be to place your iPhone in recovery mode and perform an update. This will reinstall the iPhone Operating System without deleting any of your data. Please keep an eye on your storage after the update from recovery mode and let me know if you still see unexplained fluctuation.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
- Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
- Put your device in recovery mode.
- When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
Cheers,
Joe

I put the phone in recovery mode but an error occurs when it tries to contact the iphone.
I have basically cleared my phone now but the memory is showing 9GB of Other data now.
Its pretty much unusable now.

The article below has more step by step instructions for recovery mode. Can you tell me what errors or alerts you are getting when you place it in recovery mode? What shows on the display of your iPhone? What happens in iTunes when you connect you iPhone and try to place it in recovery mode?

Apr 28, 2015 12:40 AM in response to Sbyrne1984by tkd1963,I just had this issue and spent an hour with two Apple techies on Thursday who came to the conclusion i had a software problem and my phone had to be wiped. My 6 (16gb) was telling me storage was full. As i took pictures it was telling me i couldnt store them as i had no space. As i deleted images it was like the device was sucking up the storage. I also couldnt back it up on my laptop as i got the same warning, it backed up to the second step and stopped . I have no music or films only 700 odd photos and a few apps but its worth looking to see if your previous phone is backed up on it to as my 4 was so that was taking up space. Apple told me it was a software issue and to back the phone up (which i couldn't on laptop or iCloud) and wipe it clean. If i was to restore it from the back up i may restore the problem. This would have been a major issue for me as i would have lost all i had on it. Dont know why i did it but i took my sim out of my phone and plugged the phone into my laptop and hey presto it backed up and free'd up the space. It now says i have 9gb free and 3 used. Before it said i had used the full 12gb. Had another appointment with Apple yesterday and no one could understand why the back up worked without sim but were happy, like me that it did.

Jun 5, 2015 7:27 AM in response to joe_7399by kristen_g,Hi Joe!
Thank you for the suggestions. I'm having the same issue with my iPhone 6. When I saw the issue and couldn't take photos due to lack of storage, I deleted an app that was using a bit of storage, cleared out my photos, and reduced the number of songs by about half, even though I only have a few albums stored.
I updated my software with my phone in restore mode, as you explained. I didn't get any errors, and everything updated. (Still at iOS 8.3.) But the storage on my phone is still having an issue. It says I have 1.8 GB left, though I'm not using nearly the amount it's specifying. After the update, my available amount actually went down (only by 0.1 GB, but still).
Any other thoughts?
Thanks!

I have an iPhone6 16gb with the same kind of problem. The only way to solve the problem is to recover the iPhone. However, it will stand for only a couple of weeks, than the problem happens again. in that way, I am always with the problem. Do you have any other idea of what can be done to solve the problem?
thanks.

Feb 13, 2016 3:14 PM in response to Sbyrne1984by Luise,I have been getting the same message and been deleting photos and other stuff (voice mails take up space). I went to my Camera and checked my Albums in case I missed something. There is a Album called "Deleted photos" and I had over 800 photos still on my phone which I thought were gone! Well I deleted them and my memory now shows 5 gigs FREE! Hope this helps anyone with the problem.
