Q: Magic Trackpad 2 cannot connect wirelessly

I have a Macbook Pro running El Capitan that I am trying to use with my Magic Trackpad 2. The trackpad works fine when it is connected via Lightning cable, and I can see it in various places in the System Preferences (Bluetooth, Trackpad), but as soon as I unplug the cable, the trackpad disconnects from the laptop and I am unable to reconnect it. This issue has persisted for a few weeks now. I have tried rebooting the laptop, turning off Bluetooth and turning it back on, unpairing the trackpad from the laptop while connected via Lightning cable, but none of those methods have worked. I have also tried the suggestions on this page (If your Apple wireless mouse, keyboard, or trackpad aren't working as expected - Apple Support), to no luck.

Is there something else I can try?

Magic Trackpad 2, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)
