Your Balance can be found on the top right corner of the iTunes Window or in the Account icon menu on a computer.
Or at the bottom of one of the content tabs in the iTunes or App Store Apps on iOS devices.

Mar 2, 2016 8:22 AM in response to Phil0124by rzgman99,Than you for the response, however it does not address either of my concerns. I wanted to know when a gift card was added and when purchases were credited against the balance. In the account info page from iTunes I can see purchases, and the totals, but not when gift cards were added, (or when the balance ran out and started charging my credit card).

Mar 2, 2016 8:53 AM in response to rzgman99by Phil0124,Every time a purchase is made, you should be getting an E-Mail with the receipt to the associated E-Mail address for the Apple ID. This has all the info, of what, when, for how much, and to what it was billed; of that purchase.
Are you not getting these E-Mails?
Beyond that, no you do not get notice when the gift card balance has been consumed nor when you have redeemed a card since assumedly you yourself are redeeming the card and know that you are doing so.

Mar 2, 2016 9:07 AM in response to Phil0124by rzgman99,I do get the emails and can see that same info from my account. However, when looking at the summary page of account information I can see when purchases were made, but not when gift cards were credited. I can look through each receipt to find when the gift cards ran out, but think there should be a summary somewhere, or a running total on the summary page.

Mar 2, 2016 9:27 AM in response to rzgman99by Phil0124,There is no option for being notified when a card runs out. If you can already see your Balance, and get the E-Mails you should be well aware of when that is about to happen.
Other than that, you can give Apple feedback if you want such a feature.

Mar 2, 2016 9:56 AM in response to Phil0124by rzgman99,This is true, but in real time. Not so helpful when doing a historical analysis. And still no place to see when a card was added, nor what the balance was at the time it was added... I will certainly address it with apple feedback. Thank you.
