Q: how do i network all of my products

Dear All helpful members,

I have several products which i want to use more seamlessly across the internet and indeed across IOS applications, but seem to be making mistakes..

I have the following items

IPhone 5 - used for everyday communications

IPAD mini - used while out and about

Imac air - used while out and about

IPAD Gen 3 - used at home for normal reading

Imac Pro - used at home as my base station

I have access to the internet at all times (and data usage is no problem)

I want to create and use a single file source at all times, i was thinking of buying a larger drive and connecting to my mac book pro at home  and holding all files onthis and then networking so i can access that information on any of my products at any time.

I would like to hold my main itunes account at this location.

I believe this should be easy to do, but i just cant seem to find a way to do it

Any help and suggestions on how to set my products up to enable me to use any device and access any information at all times would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help

You want to make your own iCloud?

I don't think iTunes on iOS can access non-local libraries.

Nope.   No remote iTunes, to start with.   Getting remote audio to work probably involves setting up your own streaming server or some local app that's not iTunes, and there's likely little or no mechanism to (remotely) select the music being played.   Potentially no remote access into your Mac, depending on your particular ISP and tier of service — some ISPs will firewall certain network traffic.   No software to do this is included within OS X, which means adding OwnCloud or other software, and you'll potentially want a VPN to avoid opening up insecure or unencrypted remote access to your server (as the many gremlins on the 'net will find and will probe all available remote access).

FWIW, having a single canonical source is nice, but modifying files over a network connection stinks — particularly from mobile devices, which can encounter network connection drop-outs at particularly inopportune moments, and where you're now dealing with the network latencies inherently involved in remote connections.

As stated by Keith Barkley, Apple's iCloud gets you most or all of this, with music and files on Apple servers.   You're not running it locally.  Or you're running your own cloud.
