Mac OS XHold down the Option key and click on the Apple logo at the upper left. Choose System Information. For the model identifier, what does it say? For example, mine is a MacPro5,1
This page will tell you what model Macs are supported:

Mac OS XThanks. This is your model Mac. It came with Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and can run all versions of OS X up to El Capitan. I just wanted to be sure we weren't talking about an older iMac that couldn't run an OS higher than Lion, 10.7.
That problem eliminated, it may simply be that Apple's servers are holding up the download. That seems to be happening somewhat frequently. I presume you've gotten your emails for your purchase of Mountain Lion. One of them has the redemption code. Open the App Store app on your Mac. On the lead page to the right is the Redeem link under Quick Links. Click Redeem and enter the code in the email. That should initiate the download.
I've asked the hosts to remove your image since it shows the Mac's serial number and UUID.

It's Windows software that is 5 years old.

Can't tell you what's going on there. If you have an Apple Store near you, it may be a good idea to go there and help you get a clean download of Mountain Lion or El Capitan.
We can only make guesses for the installation of Office 2011, but that's possibly worrying. Like a dying hard drive, or it's simply out of room. How much free space do you have left on the startup disk?
