Q: Where does my free storage space goes?

Is anyone experiencing their free storage space disappearing without you doing anything? I keep deleting a lot of stuff. I really make sure that I do not have a lot of things in my phone because I only have 16gb of space. Even just whatsapping, I make sure not to save the media that my friends send me but I keep getting prompt that my space is almost out. What did I do? I went to check my storage space and I realised I was left with 0 bytes! So I went to google and saw that other people are experiencing this. Solution was to backup your phone to iTunes and do a factory reset so I did last night. After factory reset, I restore my backup and guess what, I had 6gb of free space! I was happy and angry at the same time. I've never had any bad experience when I used apple before and this is a first and it's quite frustrating because I really thought I used up so much space that I kept deleting my music and kept transferring my photos to my laptop but when it's actually a phone/system error? The next day came which it's today, the phone memory is decreasing slowly and I haven't done anything to it yet! I realised this starts to happen when I upgraded my phone to the latest OS. Do I need to downgrade it or something? Appreciate it if I can get the best answer. Lastly, I want to understand why I only have 11gb of space to us when the phone has 16gb of space?

Delete the Whatsapp application altogether for the time being.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the suggestion.

If I delete the chat, I won't be able to retrieve them again?

Is WhatsApp causing the problem? Can I reinstall back after deleting it?

I have the same issue with my iPhone 6S Plus after upgrading to iOS 9.2.1.

This was never happened before (please don't tell me to check the usage & storage or delete my songs etc.). I have deleted all my songs (2 GB worth), but the storage still goes down to 0 in around 10 seconds. I also can't use WhatsApp (keep crashing).

I have done full reset and set up as a new phone. I downloaded a couple of apps (not more than 20), the biggest size being Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. No other music or anything. It is currently showing 4.1 GB being used. I do believe this doesn't add up.

gail from maine: do you know something that WhatsApp might be the one causing the problem?

gail from maine is correct. The problem lies in WhatsApp,

Take a look at this thread and follow the troubleshooting steps suggested there. The issue may be somehow connected with Whatsapp.

I just know it is causing the problem. You would have to contact the developers of Whatsapp to find out why.

    Best of luck,

Wow gail from maine, that's really a cool ability to just know the problem is from WhatsApp.

Anyway I backed up my chat, delete WhatsApp and reinstalled it. Restored my chat and now my 5GB are back!

If you spent any time on these forums, you would know the same thing. When one sees multiple threads from multiple people who have discovered the same culprit, one can draw a logical conclusion.....

There are many users on this board that see the same questions over and over again.

    Yours is one of them.

Whats app is the common problem.

Try to use the search function before staring a new topic.

My mistake. I was very surprised with this problem and maybe because it came at the same time when Apple had a software update (and WhatsApp had an app update too)

In my 9 year using iPhone, I just discovered this problem and it happened to my fiancé iPhone too (and yes the problem lies in WhatsApp).

    Anyway thanks for your help.
