Q: Ethernet port no longer working

Issue - Ethernet connection just stopped. Router not seeing Mac thru router.

Tried all these options:

  • restart,
  • shutdown/reboot
  • disk utility 2x,
  • rebooted cable modem/Router #1 & 2
  • switch out original cable to new ethernet cable
  • reconnected Mac to Router #2
  • switched out oirignal cable to anhther Mac.

All to no avail.

Bought a USB to ethernet but that didn't work either.

2 questions. Any way to fix this? and how do I set up wireless? When I go to systems preference, it asks for a WP. What is this?

    - Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Does network preferences show not connected?

You also asked "When I go to systems preference, it asks for a WP. What is this"

    What system preferences?

What was the exact wording of the message?

I tried the first portion of the Resetting the SMC but none of the possible scenarios really apply.

    I have a MacBook Pro5,1 15-inch, Late 2008 Mac OS X Version 10.7.5 laptop, if that helps.

The Systems Preference I speak of is for a Network search.

The system Profilier shows that Ethernet is not connected. "either cable is not plugged in or device at the other end is not responding." I have established that my ethernet port is not working. I brought it for a diagnostic. The person there confirmed it and suggested one of two things. Get a new one $$$$ might as well buy a new laptop or, get a USB to Ethernet cord. I did. That did not work. I am starting to think that maybe the router is not responding. We have two laptops connected to the router. One works, the other does not see a network. Also, the box says Netgear02 but when searching for network availability Neargear35 is the what pops up. Is this one and the same?

Does this help? And thank you, by the way.

What USB>Either adopter did you purchase?

    Some require installing drivers.

Ugh! That's exactly what was needed. I'm such a tool. Thank you so much for your time. I'm back up and running.

For both Peekin Duck and Illaass -- I have just had exactly the same "either cable is not plugged in or device at the other end is not responding" happen to my 2010 iMac, out of the blue, no unusual events or software changes involved.  I am getting by right now on WiFi but want to return to hard-wire.

Have tried every solution you listed in your 15 Nov 2015 post except a USB-Ethernet cable.  Your final post indicates that a USB-Ethernet cable finally worked, but implies it was a special/unique cable or perhaps with associated drivers.

What specifically does your last post mean ?  Can you please help me out ?

Wow, thanks for the quick help.  328.1 and 328.2 are both installed and ethernet still doesn't work.

However, they show dates of 26 Feb and 1 Mar which is when this began, so you may have given me something to go bug the genius bar folks.

In any event, Thanks very much - I'm still hoping that Peekin Duck will tell me about that cable.

Have you restarted the computer recently?  A restart is needed for 328.2 to take effect.

FIXED - YOUR SUGGESTION FIXED THE PROBLEM -- THANKS VERY MUCH ! ! !

31 years with Macs, and I have never heard of "Incompatible......etc", never.  The two recent 3.28.X "Installations" must be must be the cause of my problem, and it seems Apple must have delivered them without any form of notice as I have not had an OS or Security update recently.

Oddly. I also entered support with all sorts of questions and keywords, including Ethernet, but the page HT205956 never came up.  Its date of 1 March implies that Apple had to fix sort of recent error or bug.  Perhaps related, perhaps not, Excel spreadsheets in my dock (only) changed to read-only.  Some strange electrons running loose.

In any event, thanks - even with my Mac experience I doubt I could have found the fix.  Now to get after the App Store for not letting me log in using standard Apple ID via WiFi instead of normal ethernet !

Look in your "App Store" system preference.  It is probably set to automatically install system data files.  I think it checks once a day for updates.  These updates are not shown in the App Store app, just in System Profiler.

The 3.28.1 version of “Incompatible Kernel Extension Configuration Data” incorrectly listed the current ethernet driver as incompatible.  This was fixed in 3.28.2

The file is used only when the computer restarts, so if you didn't restart between the two updates, you wouldn't have any problem.  You must have restarted during the critical period, but since you had Wi-Fi, 3.28.2 was eventually downloaded, but another restart was required to reload the ethernet driver.

Yes, Murphy's Law allowed me to restart in exactly the wrong critical period, bringing on the whole drill.  Second restart after 3.28.2 arrived fixed the whole problem.

And again you passed on info I had never noticed, the "automatic" setting in App Store preferences -- up to now I foolishly thought Apple told me about everything they send down the pipe.

Now Apple Support can tell me why I can't log in to the App Store via WiFi using the same ID, password, and iMac that I successfully log in with using Ethernet .

    To repeat, Thanks.
