Q: ios 9 automatic download making me furious

Is there any way to prevent auto download of ios updates other than the general settings option for updates which does not impact ios updates but only app updates?

Here's the scenario:  I have satellite isp and the forced auto download of IOS 9.0, 9.0.1 and 9.0.2, on multiple ios devices, have utilized all my paid bandwidth for the entire month effectively putting me and my business offline unless I purchase more bandwidth.

It's an issue every single ios update but the rapidity of recent updates and owning multiple ios devices currently have magnified the impact punishingly. This has been complained about for years has never been addressed other than forum posts online suggesting non-solutions like "filling the device so full of data that no more fits", jail breaking my devices, or  apple store staff suggesting "disabling wifi", which is akin to a car dealer suggesting one can save gas by not driving ones car after you buy it.

Yes auto up date if off, OFF, OOOOOFFFF, OOOOOOFFFFFF!

Any suggestions disabling ios auto downloads and allowing full functionality of my devices is welcome.

A consideration offered by apple to somehow compensate for all the additional bandwidth purchases over the years is also welcome.

The logic beyond this function is beyond me.  Why auto download if its not desired and not requested when the consequences can have such annoying and costly results.  I also wonder how many public wifi networks have been steamrolled this month by every apple device trying to download all these updates.  Its just impolite at best!

End of rant.  Productive comments appreciated.  Thanks!

so by that... you are saying that Apple is the good guy in this scenario? Huh!

Which of my comments were you referring to? If it's my last comment about Windows 10 installing updates automatically, I'm merely stating the fact. No, I don't like iOS auto download.

@ ShagCA, Apologies, my bad. I misinterpreted your comment.

...Whlist the discussion about points, stars, prizes, etc, is of zero interest to some of us, I appreciate it, as it's doing a sterling job of keeping this thread in the current posting list.

    No problem.

I've never paid attention to points/stars etc and I don't care about them either. I will start caring if I can turn them into real cash :-)

    @Lawrence Finch

Yep, checked it and you are right.  I was merely interpreting the tutorial in the way I understood it.  It says there "any member"...

    Cheers!

I dont want to update either. I think Apple pushes software updates so it slows down older devices to a point where they are unusable and forces the customer to consider buying a new device. My experience - i couldn't use ipad 2, iphone 5s. Now i HAVE to update unless i wana ignore the message that keeps popping up reminding me to update.

    Great job Apple!

So... what you want us to believe is that Apple is purposely crippling older devices with their software updates. They knowingly provide software updates that while making your phone more secure and often offering new features, make your device unusable. A practice you feel exists solely to "force" users to purchase yet another newer Apple device.

    Do I have that right?

And yet this despicable behaviour (which you could preempt by not updating, as is your right) by Apple is, in your mind, preferable to having to "ignore the message that keeps popping up reminding me to update."

OK so please answer the 7 pages of questions on how everyone on here can "preemptively" not update.

There is no answer to that question, hence the 7 pages.

I get the same thing on my Android phone. An annoying little message *every* day that there is an update available. I choose to move on with my day.

We get it. You are annoyed. But coming her with your hissyfits and threats to go elsewhere do nothing to further your cause. To suggest, and then decline to acknowledge, that you believe this is all a master plan by Apple make some, like me, simply dismiss your concerns.

Conspiracy theories may work elsewhere on the big 'ol web, but not here. You have all been shown how to provide feedback to the conspirators.

Please please point out my threat?? I'm perfectly happy with Apple. I'm typing on an iMac, have 2 iPhones (6S plus, 6S), iPad Air2, iPad 2.

Move on with your day please.

Now I am confused ... how can you have this opinion of Apple.

Then don't update, you have some decision making ability I assume, use it.

Don't buy any more Apple items, why frustrate yourself.

Buy something else, a Nokia or similar. Why get frustrated by the things you have to pay for.

Can you imagine that person can be happy with the device and completely unhappy with the certain behaviours of the device in the same time?

Is that concept is comprehensible for you?
Like can you imagine that bugs are no comfort for the person nor the popping every 5 minutes dialog windows?

Can you imagine that person has already bought the device and now unhappy with the things that came after update ?

This is a bad user experience, those bugs and buggy behaviours should be fixed, not user should be "educated".

My perfectly logical explanation as to the why it is a bug to occupy space and abuse internet traffic once user's choice NOT to update is clear, was successfully deleted here, so logic is of no concern here according to my experience but you can at least try to treat users with respect, because otherwise the mirroring answer to your advice would be something like "why to work with people if you can't respect them, do something else", but I am not the person to give such kind of advices because I do not accept such attitude toward people. It's just there for you to demonstrate what kind of emotion you sparkle with your answer.

The forcing of updates is never going to be accepted by user, take it as a fact and pass it on through the hierarchy to the higher levels until they get it if you work for apple.

It sounds like a distinction without a difference to me. Sort of like, I love my cat but the fact that she behaves the way cats always have really annoys me. Why can't she behave like a dog? Either I deal with the fact that my cat has flaws (don't tell her I said that!) or I get a dog or, perhaps a gold fish.

You can rage against Apple as much as the Host let you get away with here. It will accomplish absolutely nothing. Your choices are to accept the fact that the phone you otherwise like has a flaw that causes you to get agitated far beyond what should be permitted by an item of consumer electronics. You can either practice some deep breathing and learn to deal with it or you can get something that doesn't upset you so much.

No one posting here works for Apple. We are all just your fellow users. If you want Apple to know how you feel, it's up to you to make that happen. You can start with the feedback link:

you aren't helpful meg. some of us are subscribed to this thread in case someone comes up with a solution but instead are getting constant spam on how we should accept whatever apple decides or that we have no right to complain.

i think your points have been heard, if you don't have any other solutions to provide please kindly leave the thread. in other words, take your own advice. this thread doesn't work for you accept it for what it is and go to a different one.

From here, there is no solution. Wait if you wish. we have all said our peace, but this is not the place to change things. We discuss things.
