Q: iPad Screen stuck in vertical mode

How it was resolved. Settings>General>Lock rotation off and mute on

the mute seemed to be key

iPad Mini, iOS 9.2

It very well could be that you had the switch on the side of the iPad set for Rotation Lock. Check this support document. About the iPad Side Switch - Apple Support
