Q: iPad connects to iPhone hotspot even with Personal Hotspot turned OFF

Recently got an iPone 6s and I noticed that my iPad finds it as a Personal Hotspot and looks like it will connect to it.  The Personal Hotspot is turned OFF on both devices.  I would really prefer not to have the iPhone available as a hotspot...how can I shut this down?

    Hi palvernaz,

I understand you would like to know how to disable Personal Hotspot on your new iPhone 6s and on your iPad.   The resources below will explain why you are seeing the options for Personal Hotspot and also for Instant Hotspot which is a Continuity feature in iOS 9.  You mentioned above that both devices had Personal Hotspot turned off, but it "looks like it will connect."   Did you actually try to connect to see what happened with these settings disabled?

Personal Hotspot is a feature enabled by your carrier.  So, besides turning off the settings on your devices, you may be able to contact your carrier to disable them if you are concerned with cellular data usage.

Share your Internet connection with Personal Hotspot

    Set up Personal Hotspot

Follow these steps to set up your Personal Hotspot:

    1. Tap Settings > Cellular.
    2. Tap Personal Hotspot and turn it on.

After you set up Personal Hotspot, you can go to Settings > Personal Hotspot to turn it on or off and change your password.

If you don't see the option for Personal Hotspot, ask your carrier if you can use Personal Hotspot with your plan.

If you're using iOS 8 or later, you can use Instant Hotspot to share your cellular data connection without having to turn on Personal Hotspot first.

Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac

    Instant Hotspot

With Continuity, you can use Instant Hotspot on your iPhone to provide Internet to other devices

With Instant Hotspot, you can use Personal Hotspot on your iOS device to provide Internet access to your other devices, without having to enter your password.

    Set up Personal Hotspot

Sign in to iCloud with the same Apple ID on each of your devices. Then check that your cellular provider has provisioned Personal Hotspot.

    Use Personal Hotspot

    • You can use Personal Hotspot on one iOS device to provide Internet to another iOS device: For example, to get online on your iPad through Personal Hotspot on your iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi on your iPad. Then tap the network under Personal Hotspots that's named for your iPhone.
    • You can also use Personal Hotspot on your iOS device to provide Internet to your Mac: Go to the Wi-Fi menu at the top of your Mac screen. Then select the network named for your iOS device.
