Mac App Storedo you have the original grey discs that came with you iMac.
If so the second disc should have the Apple Hardware Test on it.
the white text on it will tell you how to boot from it
and start the test.

Mar 8, 2016 6:37 AM in response to jnw216 [at] nyu.eduby OGELTHORPE,★HelpfulWhat is the model/year of you iMac? You may have to run Apple diagnostics:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731
Consider running Rember from Kelley computing:
http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember
Run it overnight so that sufficient loops are executed.
Ciao.

Mar 8, 2016 6:43 AM in response to jnw216 [at] nyu.eduby JimmyCMPIT,the de-facto windows app for this is mem-test86, which is free, and there is a PRO edition as well, but both will run on Mac or "PC".
Mac users may balk at the idea of using something that did not come from Apple but having teched windows and macs for years this is what I've used and what others I've work with have relied on as the benchmark, and had no residual nonsense from using this invaluable app.

Mar 8, 2016 6:36 AM in response to OGELTHORPEby jnw216 [at] nyu.edu,Thanks for the 3rd party suggestion. I could have sworn I ran an overnight mem test on a recent iMac a few weeks ago but on this brand new iMac it was not an option.

Mar 8, 2016 6:45 AM in response to jnw216 [at] nyu.eduby OGELTHORPE,Did you examine the Apple Diagnostics link? It says to hold the D key on startup, not OPTION + D.
Ciao.

Mar 8, 2016 3:35 PM in response to jnw216 [at] nyu.eduby OGELTHORPE,That is very odd since one would have to assume Apple is the authority in these circumstances. I would get in touch with Apple via the genius bar and/or telephone support and ask them why you are experiencing results that conflict with their documentation.
Ciao.
