Q: Number of items doubled when dragging to new folder

For months now, I think since I upgraded to Yosemite, when I drag a file off the desktop into a folder, if it takes long enough for the popup with a status bar to show up, it will typically say "Moving 2 items to..." If I'm moving 2 files, it will say it's 4, etc. I can't find any answers to why this might happen, and haven't figured out a pattern, but am concerned I might be losing memory if there are hidden copies of files. It has occurred with pdfs and Office files.

I'm using a Macbook Pro, less than 2 years old, running OS 10.10.5.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks.

    Hi rebeccafromcanada,

I understand you are having an issue where Microsoft Office files and PDFs that you move from your Desktop to another folder on your hard drive appear to be duplicating.  When you look at the Desktop folder and the new location, what do you see?   Has the file been moved from the Desktop?  Is there more than one copy of the file in the new location?

Rebecca, initially, I would suggest two things.  First, try moving a different kind of file, like a jpeg file, from your Pictures folder to your desktop.  If you have an external drive, try moving a file to it as well.  Do you get the same results?  Also, try doing this in a new user account, so that we can try to isolate the issue down to software or user account.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

    Take care,
