Q: New files don't appear in Finder in Yosemite

Hi All,

I have a MacBook Air (6,2) that is currently running 10.10.2. When I first got the Mac it was running Mavericks and I didn't experience any problems with it. Since I've updated to Yosemite however, I often have problems with newly saved files not appearing in Finder windows.

That is, when I using an app such as word or outlook, powerpoint, etc and I save a new file somewhere on my internal SSD, when I browse to the save location the file simply isn't visible. It doesn't matter if I change the view from list view to icon view, the newly saved file simply doesn't show up. At that point if I open the app that reads the missing file (for example Microsoft Word), and then choose 'File' > 'Open'  and navigate to the saved location, Word can see the file and allow me to open it, however it's still not visible in the Finder window.

This problem doesn't happen every time I save a new file, but it happens enough that it's become an annoyance. It happens with all sorts of files too, not just Microsoft Office files. For instance if I use Grab to save a screen capture, the saved .tif file sometimes won't show up in the Finder window where it was saved. If I close the Finder window and reopen it and navigate back to the save location the file does not appear. However eventually the newly saved file does appear in the Finder window after some undefined period of time (however I haven't been able to figure out what causes it to appear, i.e. reboot, logout, etc).

When I save a file to a location and it doesn't appear in the Finder, all I can do at that point is to re-save the file but to a different save location and hope that I can see it in the alternative save location.

I've done some searching and saw other people have reported problems with viewing files in Yosemite, but there's were related to Dropbox, or only occurred in icon view, or their files disappeared from Finder during their Yosemite upgrade, so this problem seems a little different.

Anybody else experienced this problem or have any insight?

Cheers

I've been having these problems also, on and off for months.  It normally happens with the desktop; if I save something to the desktop by dragging or formally saving, nothing shows up on the desktop.  My work-around is to select any document's icon on the desktop and hit the key shortcut for duplicate, after which the duplicate file and the missing saved file both show up.  Then I drag the duplicate to the trash.  Still, it would be nice if Apple would fix the problem.

I just ran into this tonight, downloading some image files for my wife. It was a big zip file of jpg's, but when we looked in Finder the folder always appeared empty. I went to Terminal and poked around in the folder and all the files were there.

I finally just relaunched Finder and it seemed to do the trick:

Click on the Apple logo on your menu bar

    Choose "Force Quit"

From the dialog, scroll until you find "Finder"

Click on "Finder" and the button will change from "Force Quit" to "Relaunch"

    Click the "Relaunch" button

Click "Relaunch" again when it asks if you really want to go through with this

When I did this the images started showing up in Finder again.

    My issue is similar:

I have created a Smart Folder to search for JPG's on my imac created today.  I have created numerous JPG today but not all of them will appear in the smart folder.  I have tried everything that everyone has suggested in this thread and nothing works.

On a another forum someone suggested to create an AppleScript to "refresh the front finder window", save as an app, then holding alt+cmd, drag to the Finder toolbar and you have a button to run the script when you want........which doesn't solve my problem.  Only half the JPG i created appear, and they were all created in the same manner within minutes of each other on the same day and saved in the same folder.  When i navigate to the folder i actually saved the JPG they appear in list!!  Incredibly frustrating.

    The script is as follows:

tell application "Finder" to tell front window to update every item

Thank you so much, Vramin, I followed your instructions and relaunched Finder, and it's solved the problem (for now as least!).

    THANKS!! Zach

Relaunching the finder works for me too. I do have dropbox installed so i'm not sure if that is what is causing my problem or if it would happen anyway, but by

clicking the Command/option and escape keys simultaneously that brings up the force quit window, you can then relaunch the finder

and hey presto the lost file suddenly re-appears, for me at least.

    Hi,

Have the same issue with MBA mid 2011 OSX 10.10.5.

I solve that by restarting finder and than the files reappear.

    Gui:

    1. Step 1: open Finder.
    2. Step 2: click the  menu and hold Shift on your keyboard.
    3. Step 3: click Force Quit Finder.

    CMD:

    1. Step 1: open Terminal.
    2. Step 2: type killall Finder.

    Hope it will help.
