Q: iTunes won't quit (unless I force quit it)

iTunes has suddenly decided it will not respond to being quit. Shut down will not proceed if iTunes is active. I need to force quit iTunes to shut down. I can't think of anything that has changed to cause this issue. Any ideas? I'm using iTunes 12.1.0.50; Yosemite 10.10.2

iPod, iMac

Same problem here. Even completely reinstalling Yosemite didn't help!

    Very annoying…

Add me to the list. This exact problem surfaced about 10 days ago for no apparent reason. I have not tried re-installing the OS as that doesn't seem to have helped anyone. Did try disconnecting all network connections--no joy. The only way to quit iTunes is to use Activity Monitor to do a force quit.

Same problem here; none of the above worked

    - Unsubscribed from all podcasts

    - Cold start and Fixing permissions

    - Reinstalled Yosemite

    etc etc..

    Problem still persists

    Same here.

After forcing itunes to quit, it takes 10minutes or more to restore the library.

Seems that itunes is stuck sometimes, while trying to connect/syncronize to online services (iCloud / Genius / Radio etc.)

I am having the same problem.  I have to use Force Quit each time I want to close iTunes.

In addition I am unable to download my music from my Mac to my iPhone.  I tried downloading a selected list of 40+ songs, but, except for two items and a few songs that show up in light gray with the dreaded dotted circle nothing else downloaded.  When I checked sync it said that it was downloading two items not the complete list I checked.  Even after Force Quitting and reopening iTunes, it still indicates two items to download no matter how many songs I check to download.  I also tried logging out of iTunes and logging back in.  No change.

I connected my iPhone to my MacBook Air and was able to download all of my purchased music with no problem, but of course could not get the CDs that I had on the iMac.  I'm using OS X Yosemite (10.10.5).  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, but you can't uninstall iTunes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to quit iTunes. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

This helped me find that Airparrot was causing iTunes to relaunch after quitting most times. It was causing all kinds of issues, now I only launch Airparrot as I need it.

Hi you can uninstall iTunes...if you right click on the iTunes.app in applications folder and select show package contents you can see inside the package where all the vital files are for iTunes to run, simply delete them and enter the admin password when prompted and iTunes is uninstalled. (Disclaimer: But then I don't use iTunes I withdrew from it because of issues like this where it never quits or other DRM issues like not being able to play a song I bought at a friends wedding!! because I couldn't remember my itunes pass at the time...I use google play where all my music is stored for free so I don't really need iTunes I don't use apps either but if I did I could reinstall this pest and get them, it doesn't take so long. So my suggestion only really makes iTunes go away for good and that works great for me but it's still not a solution to it constantly not shutting down even with force quit and all the other more advanced shut down methods. Which absolutely pi**ed me off enough to migrate it out of my necessary applications.)
