Q: Slow Mac and pinwheel problem - 10.11.3

Right after the latest upgrade I did two or three days ago, to 10.11.3. on my MBP, early 2011, I have issues with Mac being slow, every click and type is followed by 10-20sec, sometimes more, of waiting the pinwheel to finish the 'beachballing'. Let alone having more apps running - which I have to do for the work I do for the moment.

I did a Disc utility repair, it fixed some partitioning problem, and it got better for an hour or so, but the problem came back.

Also had OnyX check the startup disc, fix permissions etc. - that also helped but for a little while.

During or after the upgrade the FileVault started encryption (it gets paused if not plugged in to power) and it's not finished yet. That's the only thing that happened at that time with which I can associate this slowing down problem; though I cannot say if it is related or causing the problem.

I wanted to do a back up to Time Machine, but knowing it will take ages and that it may be disrupted with this issue, I didn't do it yet.

I can hardly use the computer, and just hope I can see the replies here. I was surprised I managed to type a message here. I'll try installing EtreCheck, hope it will work, and send a report here.

Thank you in advance!

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Yes, posting your EtreCheck report will one step in helping us hopefully solve the problem bewitching your computer.  Before you do though, do you have any anti-virus programs (AVG, Avira, Avast, Intego, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, Sophos, Trusteer, etc.) or "maintenance" apps (AVG Cleaner, CCleaner, CleanMyMac, CleanMyDrive, MacCleaner, MacKeeper, Memory Cleaner, TuneMyMac, etc.) installed?

I managed to install EtreCheck (woohoo) and will post the report once it's done.

And yes, I do have MemoryCleaner installed, and I've been using it for many months now, no issues before. And no anti-virus programs at all.

You don't need MemoryCleaner.  The reason I asked if you had any of those programs or programs like it installed is because 95% of people who post questions here dealing with slow/lagging/sluggish computers have them because those programs are installed.  Macs do not need "maintenance" applications.  They just don't.  There is nothing those programs do that you couldn't do yourself if they needed to be done, and 99% of the time, they don't.  Just because it's not causing you any problems doesn't mean you should have it.  I mean, my friend's dad doesn't have cirrhosis yet, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't quit drinking now.  Problems will happen, it's just a matter of when, not if.

    • You have CleanMyMac installed.  That's actually worse than Memory Cleaner.  Follow the instructions here to thoroughly uninstall it.
    • You need to change your Gatekeeper settings.  Go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy and change it to "Mac App Store and identified developers."

I had CleanMyMac uninstalled some time ago, but apparently not thoroughly, so some files are still there. I should maybe try tracing those files and delete them?

    Gatekeeper settings changed.

If you are not using the virtual machines (you have 2 installed), you might consider removing them.  If you are still occasionally using one of them, you should remove the other, AND make sure you have an up-to-date version.  The up-to-date version is because the virtual machines install kernel extensions and when you change the OS X kernel via an upgrade it is important that any 3rd party kernel extensions be kept up-to-date so that they work with the new kernel.

If you plan on keeping this Mac for a few more years, you might want to consider adding more RAM <http://MacSales.com> <http://Crucial.com> are well respected Mac RAM vendors.

And if you want to give it a real "Kick", consider replacing the internal disk with an SSD <http://MacSales.com>

BUT ONLY consider hardware upgrades if you are sure you are going to keep this system and use it for long enough to justify the investment.  Otherwise save your money for a new system which will have more (faster) RAM and an SSD which is faster than what you could put in,  along with better graphics, better CPU, better battery, etc...

I did a restart too, and the beachballing is still is there. I will also copy EtreCheck report below.

As for the virtual machines, I do use VirtualBox once a year or so, for a couple of weeks (work related stuff), but if it is a big problem and causes all this, I can do without it, remove it and find another solution for the work I did there. I don't need Parallels either, will remove that one for sure.

As for the virtual machines, I do use VirtualBox once a year or so, for a couple of weeks (work related stuff), but if it is a big problem and causes all this, I can do without it, remove it and find another solution for the work I did there. I don't need Parallels either, will remove that one for sure.

When you are not using VirtualBox, it is not loaded in memory, but you should make sure you have the lasted VirtualBox compatible with El Capitan installed.  And if you are no longer using Parallels, uninstall it.

Is FileVault in the process of removing encryption, or adding encryption?  If so, you need to wait until it has finished to really measure your performance.

Your system is 5 years old.  It is within the realm of possibility that your disk is starting to generate a lot of silent retries slowing down disk access.  This is totally speculation, as all disks do silent retries and do not report this to the operating system.  And in some cases a disk, if the read errors get too bad, it can take seconds to complete the retry attempts.  Again, I have ZERO evidence your disk is doing this, just trying to figure out why your system with few 3rd party apps interfering is running slow.

Thanks, I will deal with the virtual machines, as long as it is possible with this beachball problem, everything takes ages....

As for the upgrades, I still have to decide on whether to change the machine or do what you have suggested, but it depends on many factors and can't do it for the moment, unfortunately.

I think FileVault is adding encryption, but not sure. Can that also be the problem? Because the slowdown (that is not related to memory overload, many apps opened etc etc.) happened just after the upgrade and when FileVault started doing its thing.

Yes.  FileVault will be read/writing your disk drive which until it is finished, it will be competing with your apps trying to access the disk.
