Q: Cannot sync contacts and calendar Iphone 5 and laptop running Windows 7

I can synch photos.
I have tried synching (Outlook) calendar separate to contacts and vice versa but this does not work.
How can it be that photos can synch but not contacts and calendars?
Also, for what it is worth, it takes ITunes 3-4 minutes to recognise my Ipod when I plug in.
