Q: Is my 2nd gen iPod Nano broken?
I brought a 2nd generation iPod Nano off the eBay about a year, maybe two, ago. It was second hand, but I haven't had any problems with it until recently.
First the iPod started freezing up sometimes when I was trying to use it - the audio was fine, it was just the screen that was frozen. It was also difficult to charge up using my MacBook Air, as one wrong move when the USB charger was in would make iTunes quit because the device was ejected or something.
I've tried charging it up today, but it won't do anything. I've tried charging it using my MacBook and using a third party charging plug (where you insert the USB into the plug). None of those seem to be working. When I first put the iPod onto charge, there was the little battery symbol in the centre of the screen with an exclamation mark in a triangle besides it. I took the charger out and tried again, but it just came up with the Apple logo, as it does, but with the top half of the iPod screen all stripy. It then just slowly faded away. I've tried resetting the iPod, and I've tried doing the Option+Shift+Control+Power thing with my laptop, but neither of those have worked.
I just don't know if it's the charger, as I brought it brand new and haven't had problems with it before, or the iPod, which was a £20 second hand model.
Does anyone have an answer or an experience? Thank you!

It's getting old, so it could be faulty in several ways. When you connect it to your Mac running iTunes, does it currently appear in iTunes. If it does, you should to a Restore on the iPod using iTunes. This erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default setting. It may have hardware issues, but at least for software, it gets a fresh start
If the iPod no longer appears in iTunes when connected, try putting it into Disk Mode first
Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support
If the iPod is low on battery power, you can do the procedure while it is connected to power (the Mac's port). If the iPod goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes with iPod connected. iTunes may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery." If you're OK with erasing the iPod, tell iTunes to proceed with the Restore.
