Q: Help! Macbook Pro 15 inch 2011, Sudden restarts, Apple Saying they cannot help

Hello!  I would love some help!  My high end (like $2,300) Macbook Pro 15 inch from 2011 is giving me sudden restarts that then when I tried to open in Safe mode would only light up the gray bar about 60% before stopping again.    I believe this is one of the problems that is labeled in the recall.  (It tends to happen when I'm doing GPU intense stuff as well).  However when I took it to Apple they say they will not fix it as it passed their diagnostic.  I think that's a little bit short sighted of them.  Could they just not be picking up a problem that was caused by a clearly flawed machine as evidenced by the recall?

Anyway I was hoping someone could perhaps please take a look at one of the crash reports and let me know if they see anything.  Thanks so much!!!

I have posted my crash report here as it wouldn't let me just paste it on the forum

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Please read these instructions and if you have had a kernel panic, log and post it:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

What you posted is not a kernel panic report.

    Also post an Etrecheck report:

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

    Ciao.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Please launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

    In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Wow Linc!  Thank you for being so very clear and helpful!  I had no idea that was not the correct thing (not very tech savvy) and really appreciate the instructions!  I think I have it right this time!  Any help you can give me would be terrifically appreciate!  As a new mom of 10 month old twin boys I'd really like to not have the expense of new computer at this time.

This is the applicable Apple replacement program:

    https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

Bring the MBP back and have it retested.  If the VST test fails to pickup any 'flaw', show the technicians the kernrl panic report.  If necesssary, escalate the matter to higher management.  The kernel panic report does indicate a GPU problem.

    Ciao.

Your model is one of those recalled, and it has a logic board fault, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it has the fault covered by the recall. That's what Apple's test program is supposed to determine. If your unit has some other kind of fault, it will need an out-of-warranty repair at your expense, or you'll have to replace it. I'd like to be more helpful, but that's all I can tell you.

Okay thanks guys!  I'm going to go back and give it another shot with the panic report!  Worth a try anyway.

    Much appreciated!
