Q: How on earth do I send photos via the new "Photos" application???

I'm using a new iMac. Very fast cable connection (Comcast). The newest software on all Apple products I own (10.10.3 and iOS 8.3). I do not need to update any software.

Now, with that said, I am so incredibly frustrated. How do I email photos using the "Photos" app like we always have with "iPhoto"??

To clarify, I am selecting three simple photos to email to a friend. I have all 3 selected, and then I click on that box (I don't know the official name of the box, but it's the square thing with an arrow pointing up out of it). When I click on that box, *THAT* is where I should see an option to email. But I don't. This is what I see instead:

iCloud Photo Sharing

Messages

AirDrop

Facebook

Flickr

More

None of those options are what I want----I want to EMAIL someone. So I click on "More". Clicking on "More" launches a System Preferences menu for "Extensions". Huh???? Wow am I confused. Anyway, so I sit here staring at the "Extensions" box, and I do see my email program in there (Outlook---I do NOT use Mail). Outlook is "greyed out" and is not clickable. But I do see that Outlook does indeed have a check mark next to it already.

Folks, at this point I am so lost and frustrated I'm ready to scream. I've been a heavy Apple user since 1985. That's THIRTY YEARS! I've never used a PC---ever. I have been Mac all the way, through all of their ups and downs. And it's so frustrating to me that a user like me can not figure out something that SHOULD be incredibly easy.

I would sure appreciate some help so that I can just email photos from "Photos" just like we've always done with iPhoto.

(PS: Yes, I know that I can drag photos out of Photos and plop them down onto the Desktop. Then I can create a new email, and click "attach", and bring those emails into the email. However: 1) That's too clumsy and way too many steps, and 2) It does not allow us to choose from small/medium/large/actual size. I also discovered that I can't even click and drag a photo out of Photos and into an email. It just bounces back. Super, super frustrating!!!!). Thanks for any assistance.

You can still send pictures direct from from Photos by Right clicking on the image and selecting Share.  This will take you to the sharing options and if the option you want is not available select "more."  Resizing options become available if Mail is the way you choose to share.

Right - but they chose not to as they only want to Use MS Outlook which will not work with OS X 11.10 and up until MS updates it if they ever do - mail would work just fine but the user does not want to do that

    Hi BaliMac,

Unfortunately, this does not work. My email application is Microsoft Outlook. When I right-click on a photo in Photos (which yields the same result as clicking on the "share" icon which is the square box with an arrow pointing up out of the box), nowhere in those options is Outlook. If I click on "More", strangely enough, it takes me to System Preferences ---> Extensions. The really weird thing about this is that the icon for Microsoft Outlook is indeed there! Not only that, but the box next to it is checked. However, I have no control over it whatsoever because it is "greyed out" and not clickable.

I have played around with this for hours, and the Genius Bar unfortunately did not have any geniuses working today. But what I did discover on my own is this: If you go into Apple Mail and make THAT the default Mail application, then "Mail" will indeed show up in the Share menu. Not only that, but it will work. However, when I remove Mail as being the default mail application and I change it to Microsoft Outlook as the default email application, then we get what I just described above: The Outlook icon is there, but it is greyed out----thus, not clickable/selectable.

    So if I am putting all of these things together (what I've discovered on my own and I've read from you guys in this thread), my only options are as follows: ;

    1) Dump Microsoft Outlook and switch to Apple Mail (no can do---I very much prefer HTML email and I just don't understand why Apple doesn't offer it)

    2) Figure out what photos I would like to include in an email, drag them to the Desktop, then open each one, one-at-a time with Preview, use "Tools" to reduce size (otherwise the photos are enormous), and then drag these photos into my Outlook email (or attach them).

Does it sound like I have this right? The one thing I wasn't sure I understood was when someone said to "Export" the photos to the Desktop (or wherever). Do I gain any type of advantage in terms of time if I export them to my Desktop as opposed to clicking/dragging them to my Desktop? If so, please advise.

Thanks a lot! This has been a huge frustration for me.

Also, my apologies for using two different Apple IDs. That was not done on purpose---that was an OOPS on my part. "smitty195" and "12L195" are both me. This goes back many, many years and I've never dumped one and kept the other. Sorry about that.

    pretty much

except you can certainly use MS Outlook for all of your email except sending photos and use mail for photos only

and yes the options are as I outlined them

Then until MS updates OutLook to work with El Captain and Photos

[1] you can use the media browser if your Outlook it up to date

[2] or export to a desktop folder and use from there

[3] or use Mail at least for photos

    - the required changes to Outlook are MS's responsibility not Apple's - as Software moves forward updates have to be made and only MS can make the required update to Outlook - they finally did update so the media browser can be used  I understand

So far what works best for me is dragging the photo to the desktop and then

dropping it into an email or other application you want to use it for.

"So here's what I found to be fairly easy to do, using the current iterations of Photos and Outlook.  Open Photos and select the picture(s) that you want to send.  Once they're selected, go to the Photos > File drop-down menu, then select the "Export" option. I use the first option: "Export n Photos..." (or use the indicated Shift+Command+E" keyboard shortcut).

In the resulting window, select the options for the photos: Photo Kind selections are JPEG, TIFF or PNG.  Then select the Quality options (Low, Medium, High, Maximum), and Size (Small, Medium, Large, Full Size, Custom).  These options can help limit the size of the resulting photo files you'll be attaching to your email message. Then pick the appropriate "Info' and "File Naming" options, and click the "Export" button. Decide where you want to export the file(s) to -- I typically just use the Desktop as a temporary repository for the photos, but use whatever works best for you.  Now all you have to do is to open Outlook, create a new message, and attach your exported photos"

Outlook 2016 for MAC does not have a quality selection.

So I cannot reduce the size of all the photos at the same time.

The editing is so dreadful i have moved to Photoshop.

I can also use Photoshop to resize the photos but what a lengthy process for something that used to be effortless.

The person who introduces Photos instead of Iphotos should be fired or disposed of in a less attractive manner.

She/He has cost me countless hours of frustration and wasted time.

The idiots who employed her/him should be sent back to the unemployment line from whence they undoubtedly came

I was an idiot who transferred to Mac after years as a PC user because MAC was "so easy to use and best for video and photos"

Not really sure why you're cross with Apple because MS won't add simple features to Outlook. I suspect you need to reinvestigate the editing features of Photos as they are more extensive than iPhoto. It's always lovely when keyboard warriors want to deprive workers of employment because they have a tantrum. And this is my real name too.

Crazy isn't that Apple hasn't figured out how to share photos from the Share Icon?

So here's quick fix; Click on the photos you want to share in Photos > Drag them into your email in Mail and they quickly imbed into the body of the message.

Open Mail, yes preference it as your default mail program, the click on your photos that you'd like to share in Photos,

and then just drag them into the body of your email message. That works as a quick fix to not seeing Mail as an option in Share.

Exactly the same problem with Apple Mail.

I always use Apple Mail, it's both greyed out and checked when choosing 'More' in Photos' share menu.

But it simply does not work.

Try the media browser in Mail... Does that work? Also what version of Photos?

After feeling just as frustrated about not being able to share my photos from Photos to Mail like the old iPhotos did, l found out that when we update to Yosemite or El Capitan, the share features are modified. To reset them you'll need to do this....

If Share options or Markup is missing after upgrading to OS X Yosemite or El Capitan - Apple Support

Then your our share options will return.

    Cheers!

I am a new to Mac user and am using El Kapitan for the first time and wow do I find it frustrating. Beginning to think I made a mistake in changing from Windows. I also have this same problem but have been able to overcome it. I dragged the photo to desktop and then into mail. When the photo is in mail if you right click it then change to icon it then can be received by my wife on Windows as a standard attachment. However the downside it, it only works with one photo at a time. When I tried 2 it just sends the photos in the body of the mail even when it shows as attachments on my Mac.
