Q: macbook pro (late 2008) booting issue

Can someone give me advise on what could cause my macbook doing restarting loop when putting power on?

I have tried several things: pram reseting with cmd p r -combo and as well smc by taking the battery off and pressing power button several seconds.

I did reinstall osx again, leopard and snow leopard but still causing the same problem though sometimes it restarts fine after resetting smc but it keeps having the issue after i once turn it off. I thought maybe it's the hard drive so i installed osx to usb stick and tried starting it from there. First time it worked but after that it keeps asking to restart again.

So, maybe someone could advise me if there is something what i could still do to make it work? I guess, at least it's not a software issue or harddrive issue...(?)

Try booting to Safe Mode by holding down a Shift key when the system restarts. If the computer is able to boot properly, then you know the issue is likely with some third-party extension or add-on you have installed. This is especially true if the system only boots to Safe Mode and continues its reboot loop when you restart without the Shift key held down.

If you cannot boot to Safe Mode, then try restarting to another OS X installation such as that on an external hard drive or the OS X installation disc (Lion users can boot to the Recovery HD partition by holding Command-R at startup).

When I try booting to Safe Mode I get the same text on grey background that "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button...".

There is nothing installed on the hard drive except osx. I have tried this from two different hard drives; one from the internal and one from external with usb connection. I brought my laptop to mac store and they said it should be because of broken hard drive or the cable of hard drive. But since I cant boot the computer from usb drive, it cannot be because of hard drive issue (?). There is nothing extra installed so it shouldnt be anything with third party extensions or add ons either...

Run an Apple Hardware Test.  that may offer a clue:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

I just run the hardware test but it didnt find anything ("no trouble found"). Is there a way i could eliminate the possibility of broken cpu for example because i know the fans are getting broken and the laptop had been overheating sometimes when in heavy use quite a bit until crashes... . Does someone know if there is more comprehensive hardware test tool than the one with installation disc?

Reset the SMC and the NVRAM again.  Based on what you wrote in your original post, the NVRAM was not properly executed:

Ok. I did how it is guided in the above links. The laptop booted once fine. Then I turned it off normally to see if It starts fine again and it didnt. This time it booted fine until i saw the desktop screen but then i got kernel panic message again ("you need to restart..."). Any other tips??  I really need my laptop and at the moment have no money to buy a new one...

It seems I have to reset smc and pram every time I boot the laptop, only then it starts fine...

Actually, resetting pram everytime when boot it works fine, no need for resetting battery. What makes that kind of pram issue?

Your problem may not be the pram itself.

    What is corrupting the pram?

Resetting the pram every time is the clue you must follow.  Find out what is corrupting it.

    Thanks for replying!

I read from somewhere that there is a logicboard battery (not the main power source battery) which could cause that kind of issue. Is there a way to check if that is corrupting the pram?

Try to boot the MBP and then see if you can log and post a kernel panic report:

Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  It appears your MBP has an unhappy GPU.  Apple probably will not offer to repair it, but they should be able to precisely define the problem.  Bring a copy of the kernel panic rep[ort with you.

    Ciao.

    Thanks for replying!

I recently did a free diagnostics in apple store and they said there is problem with my hard disc (violated sectors) or violated hard drive cable and advised me to use external hard drive. But that not seem to be the case since i have tried from several hard drives. I know the laptop is too old model for apple supported new hardware and there is nothing they could really do... . Does it mean that I basically have to try replacing the gpu with an unsupported one myself since in stores they are not allowed to do that?
