Mar 11, 2016 3:49 PM in response to linadabbby léonie,Your photos have not been stored in iPhoto, but in the iPhoto Library. That is what you need to find. Usually your iPhoto Library will have been in the folder "Pictures". Is it there?
El Capitan has the new Photos for Mac application. It will be able to open your iPhoto Library , if you find it.
Did you erase your Mac for a clean install, when you upgraded to El Capitan? Then restore the iPhoto Library from your backup.
You can continue to use iPhoto, if you had been using iPhoto 9.6.1. This version is compatible with El Capitan. Check in your Applications folder, if iPhoto is still there.
The AppStore does no longer sell iPhoto, because it is no longer developed.

Mar 11, 2016 3:50 PM in response to linadabbby LarryHN,iPhoto is not gone - it is still in your applications folder unless you removed it - For El Captain you need iPhoto 9.6.1 - if you had a version of iPhoto '11 (9.x.x) then get 9.6.1 from the App Store - see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store
If your undisclosed version of iPhoto is older than iPhoto '11 then you can no longer update
However you really should consider your decision - iPhoto is no longer supported and no future updates will be made - sooner or later a future update will break it and print products are discontinued effective 3/31/2016 - iPhoto is a dead product and you need to pick a new photo manager and move to it - Photos is the easiest one since it directly converts everything and has better and more extensive editing and better integration with other Macs and IOS devices

Mar 12, 2016 5:33 AM in response to linadabbby léonie,I found the iPhoto library in the pictures folder,
What is the size of the iPhoto Library? Is it large enough to be holding your pictures?
To open the library package as TD recommended, select the iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder, ctrl-click it or right-click it, then select "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu that will pop up. Look into the folders "Masters" or "Originals", if there are any photos.
