Q: iphoto super slow even after removing almost everything from computer

I have a macbook pro 13" mid 2010

2.66 processor GHz Intel core 2 duo

OS X Yosemite

Iphoto version 9.6.1 with 18,625 pictures

Storage: 241.3 GB free of 499.25 GB

Memory: 4GB (2 memory slots with 2GB each)

I use iPhoto to make annual books of my twins. It was fast until an update crashed it and I lost everything. No one could recover my book, or photos, until I posted here. Not genius bar. IT specialists. Geek Squad. I posted my problem here and by following the steps 1 by 1 I was able to recover 75% of my book. I'm hoping for help again.

During the last problem the Genius bar completely wiped my computer out. They took me back to Yosemite because I was told here, at that time, that it was most compatible with the version of iPhoto I had. I then loaded back my other programs Office, Acrobat at home. Since printing my last book a year ago, I haven't done any updates because on my other mac it wipes out iPhoto and takes you to the new program. It deletes pics and then takes you to their new software. I want to use iPhoto to do my 2015 book. My problem is I went to start it last month and it is suddenly so slow that it is virtually unusable. I searched online and removed everything from my computer. Transferred all documents to an external hard drive and removed all photos and videos from iPhoto from past years hoping it would correct the problem (and verified they were removed not just deleted the folder or albums). I now only have 18,625 photos in iPhoto, which I need because they are my 2015 pictures. While that may sound like a lot, I had 50,000 while doing the previous books and had no issue with speed. That's all thats on my computer now. Everything else has been moved to an external. I restarted my computer hoping for an increase in speed in iPhoto and nothing. When I go to move a picture onto a page, I click, drag and place it, but it takes almost 2 minutes to actually appear and be placed. It would take me all year to do the book at that rate.

I've read that certain versions of iPhoto are more compatible with certain OS's. I was told over a year ago my 2 current versions of each were compatible and haven't done any updates hoping to keep everything the same, but something obviously did change.

I would greatly appreciate any steps that would help repair so I can do my 2015 book and get caught up with 2016.

Thank you for reading and any help you can provide.

Liza

I also have rebuilt the library a few direct times and ways, and repaired it, with no difference at all in speed.

Couple of things: As of March 31st you will no longer be able to purchase print products from Apple via iPhoto, only the new app. Whatever solution you come to on your iPhoto issues, first decide of you can get your book completed by then.

Updating the OS does not wipe out iPhoto, neither does it delete any photographs. It doesn't 'take' you to the new program either. Each and every step is a decision you make (or not). Of course, before you upgrade anything be use to make a back up.

and removed all photos and videos from iPhoto from past years

    How did you do that?

Well the March 31st is huge and thank you. No way I can complete 100 pages by then and I would have been devastated to spend all my free time for nothing. So thank you very much.

When I originally updated to Mavericks and logged back in to iPhoto it said it had to update my book to continue. So i had no choice but to continue. when I reopened the book it was empty. 99 pages gone. Then the program started crashing after some use. Then crashing as soon as it opened. Everytine I opened it it had less photos. genius Bar said all they could do was wipe out computer and restore from a back up and I'd have to reload programs etc. For some reason they couldn't find iPhoto in time machine. Everything but iPhoto had backed up the night before. I read online if the program isn't closed it may not get backed up. Don't know if there's any truth to that. That doesn't matter now. I printed out steps I was given here. Took it to them and they said it was worth a shot. Long story short it worked For the most part.

I Deleted the pictures in events I believe it was. I noticed photo count wasn't going down by deleting albums or pictures within albums and then emptying trash folder. The total number of pics in the program remained the same. Online it said because that didn't delete them. So I went back and deleted the events by highlighting the pics I wanted to delete and then the number went down from over 50k to 18k. Took a very long time.

Sounds like i'm stuck switching over and might as well update os then. i'll back up again tomorrow night then and update.

    Thank you.

If you attempted to delete a large number of photos at once (by emptying the trash with several thousand images in it) you may have corrupted the library, which would account for the slowness.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Close IPHOTO - go Utilities menu and open the Activity Monitor.   You you see MDS job running under FINDER or SPOTLIGHT your drive is being indexed by same and may take a long time.

You can print your IPHOTO albums to PDF -- in order to save a backup of them.
