Q: Help deciphering a kernel panic please?

I have been getting kernel panics on start up of my Mac Pro Mid-2012. When the panic appears at start up, it asks me to press any key and it will then reboot and start up. I have searched the web for translation of the error log, but am not having much luck. In the system report my RAM slots all report "OK" and my system diagnostics in the system report says "passed." The panics are occurring at intervals that it is making me a little uneasy at this point. I've thought a kernel panic usually suggests a hardware issue, and this has me a little concerned. Thanks for any assistance in deciphering this.

Below is the panic report, does anyone know if it is pointing to the actual culprit?

it asks me to press any key and it will then reboot and start up.

That is a windows startup message. The Mac side does not use that.

If you have adjusted the partition map or Volume sizes in any way using Windows, Windows has "helped" you by writing over the Mac Partition.

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. The message that I get is the white background and it is an apple message. It is just that when I press any key the computer then reboots itself. When It is finished, I also get the regular message saying asking if I want to reopen from the last session. I have not adjusted the partition map or volume sizes on my computer. Do you have any pertinent information regarding the kernel panic log I posted above?

That is a tiny fragment of a kernel panic report. There is not enough information to tell what caused the page fault (a reference to memory you do not own).

If you look at the location mentioned in this article, there may be a complete report there.

I'm not sure what you mean by "a reference to memory you do not own." How could I not own it if it is in my computer?

    I have three panic logs.

One is far shorter than the other two:

Check your system preferences for the startup disk, also try selecting startup disk - hold down the option key after the chime.

There is a problem with finder - that based on some general web surfing goes back to Tiger - and from this site continues through el-capitan.

According to one blurb it can take 45 minutes for finder/spotlight to catch up after a big change to your drive.

The work around fix is to back up your system - erase the drive and re-install -- which actually defragments your disk and makes finder/spotlight indexing rebuild.

    Try uninstalling the Logitech drivers:

    com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver 3.9.1

    com.logitech.manager.kernel.driver 5.40.1

    memory you do not own

when any task is started or resumed, the virtual memory map is adjusted to allow task access to all appropriate areas of memory "owned" by that task. All other areas of memory in the Virtual memory map are set to other settings so that they can neither be changed nor referenced without generating a fault.

During actual task execution, a task made a reference to an area of memory that was set to protected, but it was an area of memory that is currently in use by some other task (otherwise you would get a different fault).

In each case, the task running was kernel task. But you have not added any invasive third-party kernel extensions except the logitech drivers that actually got loaded.

The scene of the crime shows:

    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

             com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(2.0)

                dependency: com.apple.driver.AppleFDEKeyStore(28.30)

(IOHID family) has to do with USB devices

I am not certain what FDEKeyStore may have something to do with keys on a USB disk or similar

So my theory is, you have a USB device that is reading or writing outside of its designated area, and this causes a kernel panic.

Your Mac pro with Xeon processor has error correcting memory, so memory errors are NOT the issue. This is a problem occurring in about the same place each time, very characteristic of a software problem.

That was what I was thinking. I have several USB devices connected to my Mac (two USB drives, iPhone charger, a USB hub with a Logitech camera connected and a USB mouse). But I also have a wireless Logitech Keyboard and a wireless mouse (x2) that if I uninstall the drivers for, they won't work properly.

I'm thinking that my back up program which backs up to one of the USB drives may cause a kernel panic occasionally. But I'm thinking that is the culprit.

What I was wanting was someone with knowledge to assure me that it wasn't my motherboard or RAM (system hardware outside of my added USB peripherals) causing the panics. They seemed to have arrived with El Capitan.

I can't seem to run apple diagnostics. I've pressed and held the "D" key as well as tried the "Option D" and neither works to start the app on start-up. The computer simply starts up and goes into El Capitan. So I can't check my actual computer as I would like to do. I've also tried holding down the "Cmd + D" key... still no hardware test appears.

Thanks for the assistance. If you can think of something else that might be helpful I"d appreciate it. For now, I'm thinking that I agree it is most likely one of my USB peripherals behaving badly on occasion.

The diagnostics were on the original issue software that shipped with your Mac. That may have been gray DVDs. if it got copied to your current boot drive, it would have been invoked with the D key. it normally lives in a folder:

    /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics

but there is no positive mechanism that makes sure the diagnostic keeps getting copied there, and these Macs are old enough they do not have their original boot drives.

Are you powering down - or putting your system to sleep?    I did have a kernel panic on shutdown once when I used a USB port for my modem & then plugged a backup drive in.  The drive would not dismount and the shutdown generated a kernel panic because the system thought the modem was still plugged in.    The USB port that I use for my printer and my scanner and a passport drive in the front -- had the modem plugged in only once - it is back to the port in the read.      So if you are sharing make sure it is only with devices that the system understand they are not plugged in.

My mac pro came with Leopard - is still running Snow Leopard - but I had to use the Mac Pro install disk that came with it to do a hardware check -- the hardware check is on the disk that has information about the hardware test on it.    You can just restart holding the D key down and it will bring it in from the DVD.   I ran short and long -- everything is fine no problem -- but the long one took about 90 minutes not 30 as estimated - so best if you leave the room while it runs - as on the long one I interrupted it once because it looked like I couldn't stop it (frozen) so just walkawar.
