Q: Will upgrading OS X grant me airplay abilities?

I've been a Mac user since 2009. I have a MacBook and iMac. My question is in regards to my iMac. I've never upgraded its operating system since purchasing it.

I'm currently running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 on my machine. It is a 27-inch, Mid 2011.

I realize I do not have AirPlay functionality on my system. Is this because I'm running Lion and not Mountain Lion? Will upgrading to the most current OS X solve this issue?

Yes, you can use AirPlay if you upgrade at least to OS 10.8. This information and other requirements can be found in the link provided by dominic23 above.
