Q: Can I export Motion 5.2.3 to final cut pro 10.1.4?

I've created lower thirds for a client using Motion 5.2.3, but they have FCP 10.1.4 (and not Motion) -- we've tried to import, but it's saying no to the .moti files -- is there a way for us to successfully import Motion 5.2.3 title templates to FCP 10.1.4?

I cannot verify this suggestion... but it might be worth a try.

Do NOT try this if you've used any new features in Motion that weren't available in FCPX 10.1 (e.g.: 3D Text or the *new* rectangle or circle shapes.)

Make a copy of the original first! (Option drag a copy to the desktop.)

As long as the template is relatively "generic":

Open the .moti file in TextWrangler (this might work in TextEdit as long as it is not RTF format.) TextWrangler is free software and is available at http://www.barebones.com/support/textwrangler/updates.html  TextWrangler will not change the original file type.

    On line 5, there is:

    <displayversion>5.2.3</displayversion>

    change it to

    <displayversion>5.1.2</displayversion>

    and save.

Swap the original (save elsewhere) with the modified file.

    Try it in FCPX.

If your template does contain the new shapes (circles/rectangles) then go into each shape inspector > Geometry and Convert to Points.

As I said, I cannot test this. Proceed with caution. If it comes down to it -- if possible -- your client should back up their libraries and update FCPX to the current version.
