Q: FaceTime call will not rotate to landscape on Apple TV

I have been using FaceTime and AirPlay mirroring to put FaceTime calls on my living room TV via Apple TV for over 2 years.  After the recent upgrade to iOS 8 and Apple TV the orientation is incorrect.  I turn my iPhone to landscape orientation, but the video shows on the TV in portrait orientation, and the video is rotated 90 degrees.  I believe this to be a bug in either the AppleTV update or iOS 8.  Anyone else have this issue?

They haven´t fixed it yet (checked in iPhone 6s 9.2.1 and Apple TV 4th generation).

It seems to be an iPhone´s bug; other apps, like LINE, do work just fine in landscape mode.

The best option to get this fixed is by sending Apple your feedback. Joetweber explained how to do it in a previous post.

And here is the link to give apple feedback again. Keep reposting it. They will listen.

If you use an iPad locked in Landscape Orientation to receive the FaceTime call - then the orientation on the TV connected to an AppleTV using Airplay is landscape and fills the screen and sound comes through the TV speaker.  I found this solution after trying my iPhone and only getting a small band portrait in the middle of the TV screen.  I tried alternatives such as Skype but although landscape there was no sound.. Facebook messenger would only do sound through the iPhone and not through the TV.. So I think FaceTime is the best for a big screen connection but using the iPad gives a lovely clear landscape picture and great sound.

I think I have found a solution...at least it seems to have worked for me. Open facetime on the iphone/ipad (doesn't matter if you hold it landscape or portrait) and then connect to apple tv. Then press the home button on the ipad/iphone to temporarily get out of the facetime app but you should still see a video of the person you are facetiming with somewhere on the home screen. At the bottom left of that screen there should be a white screen with an arrow pointing up and to the left and a smaller black square in the bottom right corner...see below. Press that button in the lower left corner with the black and white box to bring facetime back up in its entirety and it should show correctly on your hdmi tv thru the apple tv. But as soon as you rotate your ipad in any direction it will screw up again. Hope that helps.

    Hi celloSteel,

I tried your method in my iPhone 6 S a couple of times but it didn´t work for me (it may just work on iPad).

"Then press the home button on the ipad/iphone to temporarily get out of the facetime app but you should still see a video of the person you are facetiming with somewhere on the home screen. "

I followed your steps but when I get out of the facetime app it just goes to the main menu, showing a green line at the top of the menu indicating that I´m still in the facetime call but without displaying the little window you mentioned.

I sent a tweet to new apple twitter support and they immediately responded asking more details: https://twitter.com/GunayOksar/status/708385433231695873

It is really shocking that they haven't addressed this issue until now. Landscaping works with iPad but not with iPhones. I am on 9.3 beta and still no change.

Indeed, it´s weird they haven´t fixed this issue already, I´m sure they are getting tons of reports.

It seems they are not going to fix it in any time soon (beta 9.3 and no news).

I´m using Facetime with Apple TV every single day and this is so frustrating...

It´s not fixed with the 9.3 version they have just released.

    This bug is so frustrating.

(I also updated Apple TV 4th generation)

I wonder if they are planning to fix it.

    Ok all,

I have an update to this.  But you're not going to like it.

I had a call with an Apple rep just now and she asked her senior manager - this is no longer a bug.  It's not fixed, but it's not a bug because it's not a supported feature.

    Seriously?!?!

Ok.. so that's why it's not been fixed even after reporting because all of our bug reports are not valid.

We now need to do an "Enhancement Request" from here > http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I've done one and maybe if we all do they will listen... who knows, maybe they're going to sell a camera for Apple TV instead!!

How frustrating. Count me in on the feature request submission.

(edit: Also submitted a feature request for the Apple TV here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html)

    Hey UtterChaos,

    Thank you for the update!

I had a different reply when I called last year.

They asked the engineers and after reproducing this error they called me back saying that they were aware of the error (they called it in that way) that only occurs when you use this function with your iPhone. However, they didn´t know when was to be fixed, since they don´t take those decisions.

"It's not fixed, but it's not a bug because it's not a supported feature."

This feature (mirroring the image in landscape) works both in iPads and iMacs (I haven´t tried on Macs)

It just doesn´t work in iOS (iPhone).

Anyway, I´ll send an "Enhancement Request" too.

    Again, this is really frustrating.

It feels like they just released a beta version.

I tried this with an iPad Air 2. It has the same bug and it won´t rotate properly.

But celloSteel´s method worked with iPad (not with iPhone)!

If you rotate it from that small white window it´s displayed in full landscape.

Is this FaceTime rotation bug fixed on the new iOS 10 beta and tvOS beta?

It's almost September 2016 and this problem is not fixed.

I have tried airplaying both my iPhone 6+ and my iPad 2 to Apple TV using the latest versions of all software.  Once a call is received the Apple TV display of Facetime goes into portrait mode although all looks fine on the receiving phone or pad.

DOES APPLE LISTEN ... OR CARE?  We should not be discussing "work-arounds".  We paid for Apple devices and software.  It's up to them to deliver fully working software.  Have you ever seen a group of customers standing outside a shop trying to work out together how to fix the product they bought in the shop?  Come on Apple.  Let's get back to the quality that made you famous!
