Q: Mac Pro 3.1 black screen, loud fans

Hello community,

I have a Mac Pro 3.1, 2008 dual 2.8ghz computer. I bought it cheaply as the original owner claimed it had a problem where it would randomly sleep, and a hard reset was neccesary in order to restart the computer. On turning on the computer myself I soon saw what he meant, all of a sudden, quite randomly the screen would drop out entirely and about 8 seconds later the fans go on full whack. This could happen before the computer boots, or could happen 15 minutes later. Sometimes it would happen more often when say I watched a youtube clip on full size in 720/1080p. This shut down can only be stopped by hard resetting the unit.

Originally i thought it might of been the graphics card (Nvidia 8800 GT) which upon researching had found out there have been issues with this graphics card for other people in the past, however they speak of glitchy graphics, over-heating and 'baking' the card. I tested the temps on the gfx card and they were not abnormally high at all. Infact on monitoring all the temperatures when the computer was on i noticed no abnormality with any temps apart from maybe the north bridge which was max 62 C when idling. But my macbook pro hits 75 C on the CPU when using intensive software (logic pro etc). I also tested the gfx card in both available pcie slots aswell as cleaning out excess dust from the gfx card using compressed air.

The computer has a WD velociraptor 128gb 10k rpm HDD installed. I tested the computer with a 128gb SSD which i know worked. I managed to install snow leopard from a DVD onto it before a crash and the computer worked for maybe 20-25 mins then it blacked out again. Not the hard drive then. Tested all the ram (6gb), moved them around etc, no red dimm lights on either board. Not the ram.

The only main components left really are the power supply and the logic board. I have no red leds on the logic board lighting up, so no obvious failures. And when the computer is on it works a treat.

Does this sound like the PSU is dying/dead? I thought this could be an easy software fix, but am now chasing the hardware train....

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

Cheers!

Sorry I meant there is no NEW kernel report it is still the same I posted earlier.

I know it crashes because the monitor shut off stay black and after few seconds the fans blow at maximum speed. led diag when crashed show  only standby and efi.

with no new kernel reports, the only information will be the last entries in the console "all messages" log before it starts up again. You need to be an admin to see all messages.

With no new kernel reports of RAM problems, you can assume you are seeing a different problem with these blackouts.

The startup sequence begins with BOOT_TIME which is easy to search for. Cut and paste 50 or fewer lines from right before BOOT_TIME into a reply on the forum, and readers will see if anything jumps out at them. Please don't post a screenshot, they are very difficult to read.

avast is not something you should be running on your Mac. It could easily be the cause of your problems. You should remove it now and NEVER re-install it. Your Mac is already well-protected:

    Hi I uninstalled avast,

It did the same this morning, still no led warning or ecc error in ram status neither new kernell report.

I did have two consecutive crash this morning, the first exactly like the other, and the next one during the reboot after the chime.

here is the log before the first one.

    "burning cpu" ?

that is just hyperbole. "Burning CPU" could just as easily said "using excessive amounts of CPU" there is no actual burning involved.

I have no idea how audio playback figures into this, unless you had some music going while you edited.

This line is more troubling to me:

    Mar 15 09:50:51 Mac-Pro-de-paul- xpcproxy[398]: assertion failed: 13F1603: xpcproxy + 3438 [D559FC96-E6B1-363A-B850-C7AC9734F210]: 0x2

xpcproxy  is a method for spawning off a subtask, such as a Plug-in, and giving it a separate workspace. It might be used in after effects for filters. That nothing ever happened after that is troubling.

I would think that if something had crashed a processor or called reboot there would be a log entry about that.

so let me take a wild guess here: the task is a filter process, being spun off to a GPU. the GPU never gets the message or dies holding it. The "Burning CPU" message is an issue because the CPU keeps asking " hello, are you done yet? are you done yet?"

    This may indicate one of:

    badly-written plug-in -OR-

a GPU is malfunctioning and chokes on the request.

Well GPU is still the old 2600xt wich is very low end.

I had one more crash few minutes ago,

Media encoder and after effect render were complete, and I was uploading to google drive some video for my customers.

a lot has happened since 10.9.5 and the adobeCC was introduced.  I think you may be chasing bugs here that have been fixed long ago, or beating on an obsolete graphics card that no one is willing to test any more.

If this were my Mac, I would get rid of the 2600 display card entirely and update to at least mac OS X 10.10, and make sure all my adobe software was as up-to-date as possible.

Adobe apps look for CUDA or OpenCl.

    A 2600XT has neither.

Grant has good advice. New OS and new GPU

    OK my bad

I thought it would be easier to go back to the original configuration .

obviously it s not, it s creating more problems.

I Also have a gtx570 with cuda and a sapphire 7950 Mac with open gl

i will re try with 7950 next Monday because I am away this week

but on the firsts posts I did had crashed with the 7950 I think it will happen again let's see what s in the log then!

ABout the osx I was on capitan from December to few weeks ago

and I had lots of bug crashes freezes etc that s why I downgraded to maverick I did not had the Yosemite file so I restarted from a clean erased ssd.

but if your telling me this can be better I will make a time machine and go on to see what happen!

IIt seems a lot more complicated than when I bought this machine in 2008 , so thank you for your advices I will try to find Yosemite next  week.

    .

You called out the 2600 as too old for high-end Adobe software.

¿are some of the other original-issue cards for these Macs also inappropriate for use with high-end adobe software?

    Hello again,

One more black screen crash today, happened at about 13h15, macpro was started earlier at about 11h. I switched the 2600xt for the 7950hd saphire mac edition. No task were engaged, only firefox with few web pages, and a teskedit file opened for reading.

No new kernel report, no leds on during crash.

There is this bluetooth report, I don't use any bluetooth. I am trying to turn it off, but for some reason it doesn't want to switch off?!
