Q: iCloud Mail keeps freezes while composing emails

I am working on a decent PC (in an office with very fast broadband) using iCloud Mail in the latest Chrome browser.

Whenever I compose a new email (or compose a reply) things regularly freeze up for 10 to 30 seconds while I'm typing - which basically makes it unusable.

I have tried Firefox and Explorer (the PC does not have Safari) and the same thing happens.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Any help much appreciated!!

PC, Windows 7

Since the update to Version 35.0.1916.114 m, I haven't had any issues.  Which version are you running?

Safari on Windows is no longer being updated by Apple, so I wouldn't touch that one.

I have updated to the latest version of chrome and it doesn't make a difference. I don't think it is a client side issue.

If you analyse the network traffic whilst typing a message from icloud, you can see that there are packets of 270 bytes sent to p11-mailws.icloud.com.akadns.net. (This may be different depending on geolocation)

When the freeze happens these packets stop - when it unfreezes, multiple packets are sent.

My conclusion to this, and Apple, please correct me if I'm wrong is that the handshake to this server is the problem. Due to the whole way the internet works, there are always times when traffic is redirected through other intermediary servers, or lost and has to be re-transmitted - these things can take time - that's why when you click on a YouTube video for instance it pre-caches; allowing for disturbances in the force...

It seems to me that this data doesn't even need to be sent - why does it have to be sent? Is it the "saved drafts"? That would be my guess...

So - unless I'm completely wrong - the most elegant fix would be to add an option to "Turn off automatic saving to the Drafts Folder".

I have the same freezing problem in iCloud email with my MacBook Pro (2013). I'm using Yosemite and I've kept it up to date. I use Safari exclusively. So, as far as I can see it isn't "Chrome" or any other browser that's the problem. I'm sure my note is small comfort to you. No doubt you're as frustrated as I am. In my view, Apple has to fix this now!!!

I have exactly the same problem running 10.11.1 and Safari v9 - I've been having this issue for months. This is just killing me!

No problems for me using Mail from iCloud.com or using the Mail app in the dock.

every time I need to wright a email it freezes, I tough it was my computer, but its not the  computer because I tried to send emails on 8 computers that are new.

Every internet browser that there is available to be used has the same problem What is wrong with icloud?

As near as I can tell, every time things choke for me (when composing an email, that's really the only time I notice it) I see that there is some light gray text at the top right of the compose window indicating a save is in progress (presumably it's updating the drafts folder in iCloud every minute or so). The appearance of that text isn't always reliable either. Whenever that happens it's game over for typing for anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds - a total productivity kill joy. I use a text expander (aText) and when the save/backup occurs all my continued keystrokes are (poorly) buffered and when the save/backup is completed aText goes mental dealing with the many buffered keystrokes coming in all of a sudden at greased lightning speed.

Been that way for a very, very long time. I just routinely draft all my emails in TextEdit now and when I'm done copy and paste into an iCloud compose window.

Try turning off WebGl. In Safari, go to Preferences>Security tab. In the "Web Content" topic, uncheck "Allow WebGL". This seems to work for me and my Mail app (El Capitan) had been freezing repeatedly for weeks (but then unfreezing after I would switch to Safari and then back).
