Q: Command X doesn't CUT it

Can anyone tell me why Command X launches a Finder search instead of the Cut function? Command C and V function as expected (Copy and Paste).

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16Gb RAM

The problem occurs when I'm just trying to cut a block of text, or a graphic element, or a piece of video. I don't recall when it began. But I have found it occurs in FCPX, Text Edit, Chrome, and a graphics editor. Also, I can confirm that the drop down menus all show that Command+X "should" perform a Cut.

Any chance you are using a non-Apple keyboard or installed an App that can change keyboard shortcuts?

I'm not trying to move files or folders and I haven't created any custom keyboard shortcuts (that I'm aware of) and the only keyboard I have is the MacBook Pro keyboard.

I should also mention that if I choose Cut from the dropdown menu, it functions as expected and performs a cut. And the dropdown menu shows the shortcut as being Command + X.

Check System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts, click on Spotlight and check to see if the shortcut for "Show Finder search window" has been changed to command-x.

Did you try the advice given here:

Re: Command X doesn't CUT it

to test with a new user account?

Is this the only problem you are currently experiencing/are aware of?

Do you have any peripherals like a Wacom tablet attached to your system?

Command+X shouldn't launch the Finder search, but that's not how cut works in OS X anyway. You do a Command+C to copy what you want to copy or move, then Command+Option+V to do a cut move rather than a normal paste.

If true, makes one wonder why there are Command+X shortcuts in all edit menus for Mac applications.

Because it is system-wide standard menu. Items that are not available in a given context should be grayed out. If the item is never implemented in a program, then it can be removed, but that makes the menu inconsistent.

Select the text in a File Name and you can Cut that.

Select a File icon and you can't Cut.

My comment was meant to be somewhat facetious. I'm aware of why Command-X is in all menus.  And yes, Command+X is greyed ut in the Finder for example. We're all good.

Dave, some things you can try…

    1. start in Safe Mode then restart in Normal Mode.

OS X El Capitan: Start up in safe mode

    2. Reset the SMC.

    3. create a new user and see if it has the same problem.

    4. if you have a separate USB keyboard plug it in and see if it has the same problem.

Thank you Duane! Sure enough the shortcut for "Show Finder search window" has been changed to command-x

No idea how that happened, but I clicked "restore defaults" and problem is solved.
