Q: My Canon, Brother and Neat scanners are not recognized after upgrading to OS X 10.11.3

After upgrading to OS X 10.11.3, none of my portable scanners from Canon, Brother or Neat are recognized by my computer.  Are the Twain drivers not compatible?  All three vendors insist they are but I currently have no scanner that is usable.  The drivers for the scanners have been reinstalled several times with the same nonworking outcome. What are my options?  Downgrade to Yosemite?  Reinstall El Capitan?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

The first thing to check is that the Mac can "see" the scanner. Assuming you connect them to the Mac via USB, open System Information and select USB in the left column. The top right pane will show all the USB busses on the Mac. With the scanner connected via USB, it should appear under one of the USB busses. If it is not listed then you will not be able to use it. In that case try another USB port on the Mac or another USB cable until it appears.

Also, since you mention TWAIN, there is no TWAIN backend with El Capitan. So if you want to use Image Capture or Preview to scan, and your scanner only has a TWAIN driver and no ICA driver, then you would have to add the TWAIN plugin from an older version of OS X. Alternatively, the vendor will probably have a scanning application to work with the provided TWAIN driver. This is the case with Canon scanners.

Only the Neat scanner can be seen by the Macbook Pro in System Information.  Tried both USB ports with each scanner.  The Canon and Neat software open but cannot operate the scanner.  The Brother software will not open because it does not see a scanner connection.  All software from the three vendors were updated. The previous versions were uninstalled and deleted, the machine restarted, software reinstalled and restarted.  The Macbook still does not recognize the scanners.  Interesting note is that this is a new machine purchased 1 month ago with El Capitain installed.  Not sure which version, but when I upgraded to 11.10.3, this is when the problems began.  Any other ideas?

Does anything at > Mac Basics: Using a scanner - Apple Support

or even better > OS X El Capitan: Scan images or documents help...?

Adding... I'm not sure what Canon Scanner you have, but there is 10.11 support,

Then the Brother and Canon will not work, even when using their own scanning application and supported driver. If they were working prior to the 10.11.3 update then I will recommend that you download and run the 10.11.3 Combo update. This can fix these sorts of issues that are created by the delta updates.

As for the Neat scanner, if it listed then you should be able to use it, providing there is a supporting driver for the application you want to use. So if you want to use Image Capture or Preview, and you only have a TWAIN driver for the Neat scanner, then you will need the TWAIN bridge plugin from a older version of OS X.
