Q: iOS 9 Volume Indicator with Smart Cover bug

Just putting this out there for those searching for the same issue...

There is currently a bug in iOS 9 that prevents the on-screen volume indicator from being displayed on-screen when the device is wakened from sleep using the Smart Cover/Smart Case.  The volume buttons still do in fact adjust the volume as they should, but there is no on-screen volume indicator that shows the volume and it's adjustment level. The workaround is to sleep the device again, but waken it using the Sleep/Wake switch rather than the Smart Cover...or simply wake the device using the Sleep/Wake switch in the first place. This has been tested on two iPad mini 2's and an iPad Air 2.

You can report it all you want...maybe they will get the message and fix it. But at this point, I'm really beginning to doubt that. There's a different long-standing bug (on-screen keyboard keys don't highlight correctly when tapped if you have "increase contrast" enabled) that began with iOS 7. This has to this day, never been corrected either and I've reported it at every single iOS update since then...

SergZak is correct. The brand of cover does not matter. I have the same problem with an iPad Air and a Zagg folio "smart" cover. The workarounds function as suggested.

    just installed 9.2.1 release.Not fixed ! I can't believe this, is there really nobody at Apple seeing this problem;

I have 3 friends with Ipad Air 2, they all have the same problem. I have it on my Ipad Air 2 and Mini 2.

    This is amateurism.

Agreed. Maybe Apple (or other users) are simply not seeing the issue because it will only happen if you do NOT use a passcode on your device. If you DO use a passcode, the issue does not manifest itself. Maybe Apple assumes that everyone on the face of the earth uses a passcode and considers the issue non-existent or not important.

I for one have simply given up on reporting the issue. I'm tired of reporting it with every iOS update that's released and seeing no results. I have resorted to using a passcode so I don't have to jump through the other hoops to get the volume indicator working as it is supposed to work.

I am getting more frustrated with iOS 9 day by day. Not only the performance got worse. I am missing the volume indicator too. The volume control works though. Responsiveness of the OS is average at best. touch sensitivity is worse as well. Motions are laggy. Split keyboard works occasionally. Text selection can be difficult. As well as positioning the cursor. All this on an iPad mini 2 which is definitely newer hardware and powerful.

I've seen three "work arounds" for this bug:

    (a) Turn the iPad off and back on using the sleep/wake button. (Slow)

    (b) Set the passcode to kick in every time you close the smart cover. (A bit tedious.)

    (c) Open the control centre for a moment.

These all work OK on my iPad 2 (running iOS 9.2.1).

Of these, item (c) is absolutely the simplest and quickest - a small swipe up (at bottom edge of screen) to open control centre and then a small swipe down (or tap on the down arrow) to dismiss it. Voila! (Many thanks to lehtjug for telling us about this one.)

I guess we all need to start submitting bug reports at the iOS 9.3 level, then??? (once we've upgraded) … http://www.apple.com/feedback

Remember to say it happens when you close and open the Smart Cover!

Thank you. That is what was it. Spent an hour at Apple Store Genius Bar and they couldn't fix it.

@Namer34 – How frustrating! Might be good to go back and 'educate' the Apple geniuses as to what triggers the bug and the 3 work-arounds! That way they can at least help the next person who turns up with this problem.

Too tired of this bug... Maybe they are waiting iOS 10 to fix it, but for the moment I have re-enabled Touch ID to avoid this bug and open my iPad quickly...
