Q: users can login using afp but not smb

Using afp: my users login to shared volumes fine. Using smb: even though activated (to my understanding) users cannot connect.

A user account has two different names, the 'full' name e.g. John Smith, and the users 'short' name e.g. jsmith. (These actually have official names the first being CN = common name, and the second being UID = Unique Identifier.)

While an AFP login has historically accepted either the users full name or their short name an SMB login only accept their short name.

Our accounts are supplied via "active directory". So... I guess the users are already being identified by "full" name?

While there are some differences due to using Active Directory the basic issue of having two user names still applies and using the short name would be worthwhile trying.

There are various ways to find out what your short name is one of the easiest for novice users is to look at the name of their home directory which will be the same as their short name.
