Q: Exercise ring

I did a 21 minute walk yesterday as my normal exercise pace and my heart rate was recorded at the same level I normally get to when walking briskly (114) but for som reason it only recorder 7 minutes of exercise.

Does anybody have any ideas why this would be? I've been using it regularly for walking with no problems.

Many thanks.

    Hi Doug

Every full minute of movement equalling or exceeding the intensity of a brisk walk counts toward your daily Exercise goal.

If you take your iPhone with you and record your walk as a workout via the Workout app, GPS data can be used to estimate your distance and pace. Otherwise, it is important for your arm to swing naturally as you walk or run, because the watch relies on arm motion (tracked via the built-in accelerometer) to track movement.

Calibrating your watch will enable it to more accurately estimate Exercise and other fitness and activity-related results (by teaching it how your arm movements relate to stride lengths at different speeds).

The definition of a brisk walk varies from person to person and - along with other estimations - also depends on your personal information. To check that this has been entered accurately and to update it over time:

    - On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch tab > Health > Edit - tap and adjust items, then tap on Done.

    Hi Jonathan

Many thanks for your prompt response. I didn't have my iPhone with me on this walk (I usually do though) but I thought it would still measure excercise based on heart rate as I started a walk workout using the Workout app (as I normally do when I have my iPhone with me as well). I thought the point of taking the iPhone as well was for more accurate distance data using GPS with the watch doing the actual excercise measurement via heart rate. I hope that makes sense.

    Many thanks for your help.

    Regards

    Doug

The Workout app does use data from the heart rate sensor. However, in the absence of GPS data from your iPhone, it also uses data from your arm movements when estimating pace.

Taking your iPhone with you (with Location Services turned on) enables your watch to calibrate the accelerometer. It does this by combining knowledge of how your arm is moving (using data from the accelerometer) with knowledge of how far and how quickly you are moving (from the GPS data). This enables your watch to more accurately estimate pace and distance (based only on your arm movements) when data from your iPhone is not also available.

For the best results, you should therefore allow your arm to swing naturally both during calibration and when exercising without taking your iPhone with you.

If you would prefer to reset the calibration data and start the process afresh:

    - On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Privacy > Motion & Fitness > tap on Reset Calibration Data.
