Q: non-visual notification

Hi.

Does anyone know if it is possible to have a vibration notification set for a specific time that does not appear on the watch face? Perhaps a third party app? I am a tutor and I would like to know when my hour lesson has finished without the students knowing.

Cheers

    Hi

You may find that Reminders with Silent Mode enabled meets your needs.

    • Ensure that haptic alerts are enabled for Reminders:
      • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Notifications > Reminders > choose Custom and turn on all three options (Show Alerts, Sound and Haptic).
        • By not turning off Sound, you will continue to receive audible notification alerts at other times, when not using this solution.

      • Before starting your lesson:
        • Set a reminder for the end of your lesson.
          • Create this manually on your iPhone or by using Siri (on either your watch or iPhone - eg "Hey Siri, remind me at 11am that my lesson has ended").
          • Depending on your teaching schedule, you may find it convenient to set repeating reminders (eg weekly).
        • Turn on Silent Mode: when viewing the time on your watch: swipe up on the watch face to open Glances > swipe left / right to the Settings Glance > tap the button (crossed out bell) to turn on Silent Mode > swipe down to return to the watch face.

      • The reminder will be delivered as a haptic alert, without sound. The alert will not be shown on the screen unless the display is already awake or you raise your wrist upon receiving the alert (with Wrist Detection and Wake Screen on Wrist Raise enabled).

      • After your lesson, return to the Settings Glance to turn off Silent Mode.

The Calendar app could also be used in a similar way, by creating an event for the end of each lesson.

I'm not aware of an app that notifies without a visual notification. There are a couple of workarounds that might help, such as reducing brightness on switching off Wake Screen on Wrist Raise. Neither are perfect

To be absolutely certain that the alert will not be shown on your watch face (even if you raise your wrist upon receiving it), Silent Mode can also be coupled with VoiceOver, which can turn the screen off.

Once your watch has been prepared (a one-time process) for using this solution, only one extra step would be required at the start and end of each lesson. You may instead prefer to enable VoiceOver part way through your lesson, as you will not otherwise be able to quickly check the time on your watch.

Important: to avoid certain potential issues when using VoiceOver with Screen Curtain, if it has not yet been set up in this way, check that your watch is configured as follows:

        • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Wrist Detection - turn on.
        • My Watch > Passcode > Turn Passcode on (choose either a Simple 4-digit passcode or a longer one).
        • Still within the Passcode settings screen, also enable Unlock with iPhone.

After putting it on your wrist, your watch will then unlock after whatever you do first: either unlocking your watch manually (by entering the passcode) or unlocking your iPhone. It will then remain unlocked (including when the screen is asleep) until you remove it from your wrist. When you remove your watch, it will lock automatically.

To configure your watch for this solution:

      • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver:
        • Turn on Screen Curtain (but do not yet turn on VoiceOver);
        • Move the VoiceOver volume slider to the far left.
      • Return to the previous screen (by tapping Accessibility at the upper-left) > tap on Accessibility Shortcut (at the bottom) > tap on VoiceOver (so that a check mark is shown against it).

In addition to the steps in my previous reply (setting up a Reminder or Calendar event and turning on Silent Mode), at either the start of your lesson or during it:

      • Press the Digital Crown three times in quick succession; this will enable VoiceOver and Screen Curtain.
      • For the remainder of the lesson, nothing will be shown on the screen (even if you raise your wrist or tap on your watch).
      • Your reminder will issue a haptic alert notification when due.

After your lesson, press the Digital Crown again three times to turn off VoiceOver and Screen Curtain (and also turn off Silent Mode).

If you would like to suggest that Apple considers adding new options for customising notification alerts, you can do so here:
