Q: Can't link text boxes anymore

Just upgraded to the new Pages and can't find a way to link text boxes anymore like is described here:

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/pages-linking-text-boxes

Am I missing something, or is it really not possible anymore?

It's frustrating, but I just use the old Pages for my docs with text boxes, which is most of the time, and the new Pages—with it's irritating interface—for other documents.

    Hi

I realise this post is from 2013 but wanted to clarify for anyone who searches on Google and gets this post: If you have a new or existing document in Pages v5, you can select the page in Pages (i.e from the view toolbar, click on the page you want to edit), or ensure the page is selected, and then go to File and click on "Convert to Word Processing' and this will convert you workflow to word processing. I have done this with an image in the background, a table on my page, and a text box, and nothing moved. It was seamless. It also ONLY converted the page which was selected - not the whole document. This also works for when you start a new document. You can't then convert BACK to 'page layout' so far as I know.

    Just correcting the above post.

The entire document (not a single page) is converted from Word Processing to Layout and back.

Basically the default Document Body between the documents margins is turned on or off. That means the contents of that Document Body can be lost.

Floating objects are not affected unless they are on pages that disappear if it becomes a Word Processing document with less pages.

The point is not losing text or images. It's that you used to be able to "flow" text between text boxes across pages, so you could do a layout, get the text from someone else (edited or corrected) and just re-flow it. Fast and simple for doing more professional work like newsletters.

As far as I know, Apple has still not restored this functionality, making Pages simpler, but much less useful in a professional environment. The original post was in 2013? Guess Apple is going to drop the ball on this - hopefully someone else will provide an affordable alternative!

Why are you telling me this?

No, Apple has not restored this functionality or the other 100+ features still missing and given it is almost two years since they introduced Pages 5, it looks like they are not going to.

Where are all those people who posted here with 10.000% certainty that Apple would fix all this? I and others were heavily attacked for not drinking the Kool Aid.

I don't expect Apple ever to restore Pages functionality. I was pretty skeptical even when they said they'd do it, and rightly so. There is no Tooth Fairy at Apple laboring away in Swift to reanimate Pages into some form of professionally useful app. Like I said, I hope someone (Affinity?) will produce an affordable app for page layout. Reading between the lines, the intelligent primate would conclude that I'm not exactly waiting for Apple to shower me with bananas.

I just wanted to make sure nobody thought Apple restored anything or even provided a workaround. They didn't. They [almost certainly] won't. End of story.

Maybe we can get a Pages Edition that costs a lot of money and comes in pretty colors, but otherwise isn't any better than the version given to the rabble.

I also didn't expect to start a flame war, but then chimpanzees can be very aggressive.

    There is no flame war.

I am mystified however that this is still popping up as some great surprise.

Bit like the "We have a pool?" remark in WALL-E.

I don't get how this keeps coming up, either. It was relevant back when Apple gutted Pages. Now, not so much. I don't know why people keep posting "solutions" either. No workaround, no solution. Time to move on, but it's sometimes amusing to post here.

With this thread somewhat reanimated, I hope whoever at Apple that may have fought to keep Pages intact will read this and get a chuckle out of it. But maybe not - they're probably going to be assigned to the lowermost bolgia of Spaceship Apple to work on control feedback routines for the digital crown of the next Apple watch, someplace they won't make any waves or cause any trouble.

Hey all! I figured out a (partial) solution.

Click on the text box you're interested in, then go to the menu "Arrange", go to "Section Masters" and then select "Move Objects to Section Master". This should replicate/link the box across all the pages. I *think* you can make different sections for your document and then move objects to that section if you want it replicated across all those pages. This works for things like Table of Contents section (if multiple pages) etc.

    Anyway, I hope this helps!

    That is not linked Textboxes.

Linked Tetboxes have text flow from one Textbox or shape to another across pages. That has been removed in Pages 5 along with a lot else besides.

This is horrible....I submitted a feature request / complaint on the Pages product page, no response.

I can't believe Apple is borrowing money to dole out to investors...and yet seemingly is either not spending the money on or doesn't care about making Pages a usable word processing app.  Even Adobe InDesign has linked text boxes.

There's no way Jobs would have allowed this crap to role out.

Other thought is maybe they don't care because they want you to by MS Office on a Mac instead.

    Anyway, I'm completely befuddled.

Good luck with that, Pages 5 has been out over 30 months now. I think this is it.

Just use Pages '09 if you have it, until something else comes along.

Apple pages update to 09 was the biggest mistake I ever made. I had created an 80 page educational document that had 4 pages of contents all linked to the anchored titles of each section throughout the document for easy navigation. Then save to pdf and imported to flipbook for a state of the art online tutorial easily updated for my subscribers.

Then apple updated pages to 09 with no real notification of how they took out fantastic tools like anchors and linking text boxes and it pretty much meant that I lost all the greatness of my document. So I updated thinking Apple Pages programmers would improve not de-list features. Did someone from Microsoft design '09 for them?

Word doc ***** compared to Pages 08 but Pages 09 completely ***** compared to any of them. So thanks Apple for dangling a carrot and then throwing it in the bin
