Hi everyone.  Now that Mavericks installer is no longer on the App Store, seems there are two or more ways to install (opt upgrade to) Mavericks (10.9).  There's a USB installer which does not require Apple sign on in the beginning, and one which requires signing in at the start.

What are the differences and similarities of these two methods?   If one uses the full install not requiring sign-on, will 10.9 updates still be available subsequently?

What about the recovery partition OS?  If 10.75 or 10.85 resides on the computer one is upgrading to 10.9, will one method update the recovery partition to 10.9 ?

Lastly, heard there's a program which will modify the recovery partition to coincide with the newly upgraded OS.  What is/are that/those apps?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

    1. Updates still should be available.

    2. Both should update the Recovery Partition.

    3.Recovery Partition Creator 3.8

    Thank you "Root User".   Funny.

    Okay, upgraded to Mavericks, but:

    • 1.  How may one detect which OS is the Recovery Partition?  Using Terminal it is verified as present and 650 MB, but I'd like to know the OS it would reinstall.  Did the Mavericks installer upgrade the R.P. ?   (Doesn't the R.P. stay the same OS as when the MacBookPro was purchased ?)

    • 2.  Has anyone here used Partition Creator 3.8?  If so, any problems ?  If the Recovery Partition is OS 10.85, will Partition Creator overwrite it with the Mavericks recovery partition ?  The authors webpage (see Eric Root's link above) seems to indicate that the R.P. must be deleted for Partition Creator to reinstall the upgraded OS R.P.  If P.C. fails after deletion, how does one restore the R.P. back to the way it was before deletion.  Isn't Carbon Copy Cloner the only app which will copy the partition to and from an external drive?

Just found one answer.... Carbon Copy Cloner's "Disk Center"  displayed that Mountain Lion is the recovery partition.  Will clone the ML RP then the drive, and try deleting the ML RP and make a Maverick's R.P. with Partition Creator.  Of course,m retaining a complete backup clone.

Other than CCC, what's another way to determine the RP's OS ?

Eric Root:  " Both should update the Recovery Partition."

The Recovery Partition was never updated.  Not by 10.75 ---> 10.85, and not by 10.85 ---> 10.95.  So when is the R.P. updated if not by that third party app ?

You are welcome. It is supposed to be updated when the new OS is installed. Workaround below.

Won't Carbon Copy Cloner redo the recovery partition so it coincides with the upgraded OS?

Yes, provided the Recovery Partition it saved is the updated one.
