Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage
Then tap on Manage Storage under STORAGE (not ICLOUD). It should list all the apps & the amount of storage they are using. Go from there and find the memory hogs. There is no need to delete messages if they are not consuming much storage.

Please be cautious there. If you have iCloud Photo Library turned on and you delete them in your phone you will also delete them from iCloud and all your other devices that are likewise enabled.
